Arsenal star Jorginho has thrown his weight behind the Gunners’ recent transfer business, issuing a glowing verdict of Edu and Mikel Arteta’s work in the market.
The Premier League hopefuls were once again active in the summer transfer window, penning deals for a total of four players.
David Raya’s loan move from Brentford was made permanent, while Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino were brought in to add depth to a squad that was at times stretched last season.
However, it’s the addition of Raheem Sterling, who joined on loan from London rivals Chelsea, that Jorginho believes could prove Arsenal’s best bit of business this summer.
Speaking to the Seaman Says podcast via Betway, the Italian commented: “You know the club – especially Mikel and Edu with what they are doing – who they are bringing [in] is just right, so something good is going to happen for sure.
“Then when you see there's a player [Sterling] that you played with and you know the qualities already, you know how they can help. You know how to give him the ball already, so you don't need to get to know him.
“I am honestly not there looking at the news and stuff like that, because it’s mad. It’s different now, there’s even too much information there, and sometimes it's not even true.”
Sterling’s move to the Emirates somewhat came out of the blue, with an 11th-hour transfer from Chelsea not being confirmed by the club until after the deadline had passed.
Reflecting on how he found out Sterling was Arsenal-bound, Jorginho continued: “Then we found out that he was coming, and he's going to be great for us with his qualities. He’s won already, I think it was a good signing and I think he can add a lot to the team.
“For me, we have Mikel there. He's great, great coach. He's super young, and he has a long way to go. He knows so much about the game that he can improve any player.”
Sterling could be called on immediately this weekend, with Arteta and co. in the midst of an injury crisis.
Declan Rice and Merino (both injured) won’t be involved, while the expectation is that Martin Odegaard will also miss out after the midfielder hobbled off during Norway’s midweek clash against Austria.
The addition of a player like Sterling, who Arteta has worked with at Manchester City before, could be a cause for concern from a Tottenham point of view, especially given the pair have had a full two weeks to work together on the training ground.
Arsenal face rivals Spurs in the north London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend.
