Latest Arsenal news with former striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sending a brutal trophy reminder to Mikel Arteta
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has sent an Arsenal message on the four-year anniversary of the club's FA Cup triumph. The 35-year-old scored both goals in the victory over Chelsea after also grabbing a brace against Manchester City in the semi-final.
Those four strikes at Wembley helped Aubameyang on his way to bagging 92 goals during a four-and-a-half-year spell in north London. Just a few months later, Arsenal returned to England's national stadium and won another trophy by beating Premier League champions Liverpool in the final of the Community Shield.
With two bits of silverware in the bag, Arsenal looked set to build on their success with Aubameyang as their talisman. However, the Gunners struggled in the 2020/21 campaign with those difficulties continuing into the next season before Aubameyang saw his contract terminated by mutual consent in early 2022.
The Gabon international then signed for Barcelona, just a few days on from his unauthorised visit to the Catalan City while Arsenal travelled to Dubai for a warm-weather training camp. In the wake of his exit, Aubameyang seemed to make it very clear it was an issue between himself and Arteta.
As such, his love for Arsenal as a club is something that still clearly remains with that fact reiterated by his social media post on Thursday. Replying to the Gunners' post celebrating their FA Cup victory on this day in 2020, Aubameyang simply wrote: "[red and white circle emoji] 4y already."
Though he was just remembering a favourite moment in an Arsenal shirt, his message serves as a reminder that Arteta has struggled to capture more silverware since his exit. The Gunners did win the Community Shield nearly 12 months ago, however the north Londoners undoubtedly want Premier League or European glory.
Following another campaign where they pushed Manchester City all the way, Arsenal will be aiming to go one better this time around. Having strengthened in defence, with the addition of Riccardo Calafiori, alongside the return from a long-term injury absence of Jurrien Timber which will make him feel like a new signing, Arsenal are in a superb position to finally end Man City's domestic dominance.
