There were a few Chelsea players who really stood out in their side’s 1-0 victory against Bournemouth on Saturday.
For example, Christopher Nkunku and Jadon Sancho both came off the bench to make a real impact for Chelsea.
Nkunku scored the winning goal, which was set up by Sancho. Sancho was making his Chelsea debut and did not disappoint Enzo Maresca, who decided to bring him on at half-time.
The winger won the Man of the Match award, but he could not have had any complaints if it had gone to Robert Sanchez after his display.
Sanchez stopped Chelsea going into the break 1-0 down after saving Evanilson’s penalty.
Overall, the goalkeeper was terrific. In fact, Sanchez probably hasn’t played better in a Chelsea shirt.
Several pundits were quick to praise the 26-year-old after the match, including Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.
Discussing Sanchez’s performance on Match of the Day, the former striker said: “The keeper was brilliant as well, I thought. Sanchez was superb.”
Shearer predicted Chelsea to beat Bournemouth in a tight affair, and it proved to be just that.
Filip Jorgensen was already an option being overlooked heading into the Bournemouth game.
“Robert will be [the] Premier League [goalkeeper],” Maresca said before Chelsea’s win against Wolves last month.
As of now, the 22-year-old is clearly the Blues’ second-choice goalkeeper, and that is not going to change any time soon if Sanchez puts in more performances like his recent one at the Vitality Stadium.
Chelsea have games against Barrow in the Carabao Cup and Gent in the Conference League coming up. The Denmark U21 international has to take them if he wants to oust his £25m teammate out of Maresca’s starting XI.
The competition is healthy, though, and may be what is pushing Sanchez right now. Maresca has a big squad filled with so much talent. Chelsea fans will now be hoping that they can all push each other and help the club reach its main objective this season, Champions League qualification.
