Manchester City have a track record when it comes to being linked with and signing players from fellow Premier League sides.
Even though City ultimately only brought in Savinho and Ilkay Gundogan, they were still linked with moves for a couple of Premier League players throughout the most recent summer transfer window.
Now that the new campaign has got underway, one of those players has shown why he found himself on City’s transfer radar and why the Blues may end up regretting not securing a move for him over the summer.
Back in April, it was reported by The Telegraph that City were plotting a move for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who up until the end of June had a release clause in his contract worth £100m.
In fact, Eddie Howe spoke about the uncertainty surrounding the midfielder’s future at St. James’ Park once the rumours about a potential move to Pep Guardiola’s side emerged, saying how his aim is to build the Newcastle team around Guimaraes.
The Tyneside club paid £40m (via Sky Sports) to sign the Brazilian back in the 2022 January transfer window.
Since then, Guimaraes has gone on to make 111 appearances for Howe’s side across all competitions, scoring 17 goals and supplying 16 assists in the process.
Having seen a potential move to City over the summer not materialise, the midfielder has shown in the early stages of his latest Premier League campaign with Newcastle just how good he is.
As one of the four outfield players to feature in every minute of action across Newcastle’s three opening league games of the season, this highlights how important he is for Howe’s side.
As a result of his prominence in the team, Guimaraes has made more progressive passes (19) than any other player at the club.
He’s also racked up the highest combined total of tackles and interceptions (15) at Newcastle and the joint-second-highest for shot-creating actions (6), as well as winning more fouls (16) than any of his teammates.
The midfielder’s overall performances have earned him a strong early season rating of 7.11/10 from WhoScored, making him the second-highest-rated outfield player at Newcastle.
Taking all of that on board, if Guimaraes continues in this vein of form, City should reignite their interest in him and make a move for him in the future.
