Manchester City don’t often get things wrong when it comes to buying and selling players, but Cole Palmer has been doing his level best to make the club look silly since joining Chelsea.
Palmer left Manchester City in the summer of 2023 to join Chelsea in a £42.5 million transfer deal.
The move raised eyebrows at the time, and it was widely suggested that City had done some really good business. Ultimately, Palmer was a fringe player at City and had only made a handful of Premier League appearances.
So it was felt that City had really rinsed Chelsea.
But that £42.5 million fee now looks like a total bargain, with Palmer having absolutely shone from the moment he arrived at Stamford Bridge.
So far he has made 58 appearances and scored 32 goals. He’s also laid on 20 assists.
Palmer has thrived in Chelsea’s team and he has dragged them back up to where their fans expect them to be after a couple of years of struggle.
Palmer’s rise at Chelsea has made for uncomfortable viewing for City fans – and he’s now made some comments that have left supporters even more gutted.
Palmer has done a new interview with GQ magazine and spoke about his exit from City.
Palmer admitted it was ‘annoying’ not to play regularly for City. But the youngster has suggested he didn’t want to depart permanently initially.
It is mentioned in the interview that Pep Guardiola had said Palmer had wanted to leave the club for two years.
But Palmer denies this, saying: “No – do you know what, I just wanted to go on loan.”
On social media, Palmer’s comments have been doing the rounds – and plenty of fans are gutted.
It’s been a while now since Palmer left, but it’s still difficult for many to accept that he is no longer a City player. Especially because it is now crystal clear that Palmer just did not want to leave the club – he only did so in the end because he had to, to play regularly.
Some aimed their frustration at Guardiola.

Many City fans are happy for Palmer because he is now playing regularly at the top level and showing everyone what a brilliant talent he is.
But it’s also difficult to see him thriving like this in the knowledge that he was very keen to stay at the Etihad Stadium, until it became clear to him that he would not play regularly. Palmer showed great desire to join Chelsea once his situation was apparent, according to Blues director Paul Winstanley.

To add to the frustrations, attacking players that have come in after Palmer’s departure have struggled for consistency.
Jeremy Doku has his moments but his end product is inconsistent. Savinho looks like he could become a great player, but his finishing needs a lot of work.
