Andre Onana given heroic welcome in Uganda from Man Utd fans, and lives up to the hype

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is toasting a successful international break with Cameroon.

Andre Onana has had a complicated relationship with the Cameroon national team. He even retired from international football after the 2022 World Cup, before returning for this year’s African Cup of Nations – which did not go well.

Onana remains involved for Cameroon, called up for their recent AFCON qualifiers.

And these recent matches have gone very well, with Onana enjoying one of his most uplifting international experiences so far.

Uganda fans hail Andre Onana

Cameroon took on Zimbabwe for the ‘away’ fixture, which was peculiarly being held in Uganda.

Host country Uganda have recently renovated their 42,500 national stadium, and have signed up Zimbabwe and Kenya to play matches there.

This meant an opportunity for Ugandan Manchester United fans to treat Andre Onana to a party-like atmosphere, where he was the main attraction.

Ugandan outlet Daily Monitor reported how a mass of United supporters from Uganda made their support known for Onana from the stands.

The supporters were pictured wearing Manchester United kits, jumping, cheering, and waving Red Devils flags, doing their best to make Onana feel welcome throughout the game.

Even after the game had concluded and Onana was leaving the stadium with his team, there was a commotion.

Uganda fans ran towards the star hoping to get a glimpse of the Manchester United goalkeeper, with Daily Monitor declaring ‘Andre Onana may never forget Uganda’.

Onana lives up to star billing

As for the match itself, Andre Onana was not distracted by all the fanfare, and produced a performance living up to the star billing.

Onana kept a clean sheet as Cameroon secured a 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe, making five saves in the process.

This followed a 1-0 victory the previous game over Namibia, with Onana unbeaten across his two games.

He can return to Manchester United with a big smile on his face, after the tough experience facing Liverpool last time out. Who said international breaks were bad?
