Napoli loanee Victor Osimhen enjoyed a triumphant start to his season-long loan at Galatasaray on Saturday evening. The reigning Turkish Super Lig holders brushed Rizespor aside with an overwhelming 5-0 victory on home turf.
Osimhen left Napoli to join Galatasaray at the start of September after failing to find a new club in the summer. He has reunited with the ex-Partenopei ace Dries Mertens in Istanbul. But while the former troubled the scoresheet in today’s emphatic win, the Nigerian drew a blank.
Despite a scoreless debut, Osimhen registered an assist as Abdulkerim Bardakci made the last touch before the ball got into the net after he headed a corner-kick delivery goalward. Unlike the 25-year-old, another former Napoli star had his name on the board.
Mertens scored Galatasaray’s fourth, increasing his seasonal tally to two. Osimhen wasted several decent chances to open his account in Turkey, but it wasn’t the highlight of his first Super Lig appearance. The borrowed Napoli striker had a nasty collision with Rizespor defender Husniddin Aliqulov.
Strong as he is, Osimhen quickly got back on his feet. But Aliqulov wasn’t as lucky. The Uzbek center-back had to be taken to the hospital as he suffered a concussion. Galatasaray netted three goals after his unfortunate accident to maintain a 100% league start.
Napoli will unlikely welcome Osimhen back at the end of the season. The Nigerian center-forward hopes to shine in Turkey to draw interest from Europe’s top clubs after his suitors back off in the summer.
