October 24, 2010, was a historic day for a former Washington Redskin.
The Redskins were 3-3 and traveled to Chicago to take on the 4-2 Bears. It was a sunny fall day with a kickoff temperature of an ideal 67 degrees. Most Washington fans don’t remember the game when it was first mentioned, nor do they recall that Washington defeated the Bears 17-14 that day.
One thing that has gone largely unnoticed is that Washington fumbled six times that day, yet it lost only one of those fumbles. Many Washington fans remember cornerback DeAngelo Hall’s remarkable day. Hall intercepted Bears quarterback Jay Cutler not once, not twice, not three times, but an unbelievable four times! Hall’s four interceptions helped the Redskins defense produce six takeaways that day, winning the turnover margin 6-3.
I had completely forgotten that all four of Hall’s interceptions came in the second half. “I just remember feeling like, man, we got to make a play,” recalls Hall. The Redskins trailed 14-10 in the third quarter and “Devin Hester was a great receiver, but I’m like, I can beat this dude out of his break. So at the Washington 47-yard line, Cutler looked to his right for Hester. Cutler didn’t lead Hester far enough out, and Hall broke on the ball for the interception.
On the next Bears possession, the ball was at the Redskins' 13-yard line. Cutler lazily lofted a dangerous pass to his right, which Hall broke on, intercepted, and raced 92 yards down the left sideline for the go-ahead touchdown with 1:36 remaining in the third quarter.
With 10:10 remaining in the final quarter, the Bears had the ball deep in their own territory. Cutler looked right, and Hall jumped a slant route, picking off Cutler for his third interception of the half. Then, with 2:23 remaining, the Bears were at their own 47 when Cutler forced a deep throw, with Hall already deep and waiting on the go route.
“The last pick, two minutes left, they actually had a chance; Jay just threw it up,” Hall said. That was awesome. I felt like Michael Jordan in the zone... couldn’t miss a shot.”
A historic day for Hall, who would play 14 NFL seasons with the final 9.5 in the burgundy and gold.
