Former India National Cricket Team batter Ajinkya Rahane appreciated the Indian team management for bringing back Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to the opening position. After batting at No.3 in the second T20I match against New Zealand, Sooryavanshi was promoted to the opening slot to combine with Abhishek Sharma in the third match of the 5-T20I away series.
Ajinkya Rahane, in his YouTube video, stated that it was great to see the team management placing the 15-year-old in the positions where he prefers to play. With Vaibhav Sooryavanshi top in the batting order, Team India defeated New Zealand in the third match by a six-wicket win with 40 balls to spare.
India got a rocket start in the 199-run chase as Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma stitched a 133-run partnership for the opening wicket. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi missed his well-deserved half-century by only 5 runs, but he accomplished his tasks with perfection.
As Sooryavanshi and Abhishek were the two openers, Sanju Samson was pushed to the No.3 batting position in the absence of Ishan Kishan. Ishan Kishan missed the second and third matches of the series. In the second match, Sooryavanshi played as No.3 batter.
Ajinkya Rahane, in his explanation, mentioned that promoting Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from Number three to an opening was a sensible call made by the team management. The teenager will learn gradually, as the former batter stated.
"Sanju was sent in at No. 3, while Vaibhav was promoted to open the innings, which I think was a sensible call by the team management. He is 15 years old and had never batted at No. 3 before the second T20I. He is in good form and is the kind of player who likes to go out early, attack and dominate," Ajinkya Rahane opined on his official YouTube channel.
"He will learn gradually, and that is something he may need to learn as well. Whether he gets to bat at that position every time is a different matter because when Ishan Kishan returns, we might see Sanju Samson opening the innings again," he added.
The former top-order batter further expressed that he enjoyed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi playing for the national cricket team as the young batter demonstrated his aggression, intent and confidence through his batting.
"So, it was a good opportunity for Vaibhav, and he did really well. But I am sure that, considering the calibre he has shown, the management made the right call by promoting him up the order. At least the management gave Sooryavanshi a chance to bat at his preferred position," Rahane continued.
"It was really good to watch him bat, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The best thing was the intent he showed on the very first ball, hitting it over mid-on. It demonstrated how confident he is and how much he trusts his own ability. That is a very big thing.”
