The Lions Rugby Company has confirmed the death of player Hyron Andrews on tour with the team before their Champions Cup fixture against La Rochelle in France.

The franchise said they would fulfil their opening match against the French side on Saturday night in honour of Andrews.

The former Sharks and Sale Sharks lock is survived by his wife, Maiglin, and their young sons.

“We are heartbroken by the passing of Hyron,” said CEO Rudolf Straeuli.

“He was not only a gifted rugby player but also a cherished member of our Lions family, having recently joined us this season.

“On behalf of our chairperson, Altmann Allers, the board and everyone at the Lions, I extend our deepest sympathies to Maiglin, their young sons Hendrix and Emerson, and the entire Andrews family.

“We stand with them in their sorrow and will remember Hyron with great affection and respect.”
