Perhaps A’ja Wilson was like those of us who were so sure about the revamped Miami Heat team. But two and a half games into the season, the revamped team around Bam Adebayo is not looking promising. The Heat, after starting the season 0-2 with massive margins against the Timberwolves and Pistons, the Charlotte Hornets are also giving this Heat squad a walloping. (As of this writing, the Heat went down a 20-point deficit.) From the looks of it, A’ja Wilson, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Erik Spoelstra can no longer contain their frustrations.
The Las Vegas Aces superstar and newly crowned 5x WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson was caught on broadcast cameras looking visibly frustrated while sitting courtside. Fans have already named this ‘the look’ that foreshadows doom and gloom as Miami is well on its way to a third loss to the short-handed Charlotte Hornets.
Attending the road game in support of her boyfriend, Bam Adebayo, Wilson’s stern expression instantly went viral across social media as the Heat tumbled toward an uninspired 58-66 halftime milestone. Cameras cut to Wilson in the crowd, whose unimpressed reaction sharply contrasted with the Hornets announcers’ excitement about having the WNBA royalty in the building. But it perfectly mirrored the growing irritation among Miami fans watching the team fall behind by double digits.
The viral moment unfolded amid a disastrous stretch for the Heat in Charlotte. With the Heat failing to generate momentum, head coach Erik Spoelstra made a swift substitution early in the third quarter, subbing in Bobby Portis for Adebayo just 1:53 into the second half to stem the tide.
Later in the game, Antetokounmpo was seen staring off into the distance on the bench with a thousand-yard stare as Charlotte extended its lead.
The visual misery continued on court when Adebayo received the ball in the paint, only to have Grayson Allen strip it clean for a turnover. Allen came away with the defensive stop while a visibly angered Antetokounmpo looked on, illustrating a team struggling across all facets of play.
The Heat’s struggles against the Hornets highlighted severe systemic issues on both ends of the court. Entering halftime trailing 66–58, Miami was dominated on the glass and outmuscled on defense.
As noted by Miami Herald writer Barry Jackson, Miami entered the second half facing glaring statistical deficits across the roster.
“Of the 313 players who have appeared in an NBA game this season, Heat players account for 3 of the 4 worst plus-minuses through halftime,” Jackson reported. “Miami has been outscored by 55 with Mitchell on the court, 54 with Bam, 50 with Wiggins. Charlotte 10 for 22 on 3s despite playing without one of NBA’s great young shooters… Miami has been outrebounded by 12, now a minus 37 on boards in 2 1/2 games. Hornets up 66-58 at half… All very unfortunate.”
The game is in its fourth quarter and Miami is continuing to fall behind; there’s been no A’ja Wilson sighting after that first one. That says a lot.
With the Heat now winless through their opening stretch of the campaign, A’ja’s look that represented a frustrated fanbase could be the sign that Spoelstra and his coaching staff need to answer urgent questions regarding rotation adjustments and interior defense before heading into their next regular season matchup.
