The Kansas City Chiefs are shopping, and their fans have already filled the cart. Garrett Wilson? Add him. Calvin Ridley? Worth a look. Someone who can give Patrick Mahomes a little help? Please.
A report that Kansas City has been calling around for a wide receiver sent fans straight into trade-deadline mode. Some started picking out names. Others have heard enough of these rumors to keep their expectations firmly on the floor.
According to Adam Schefter, as relayed by Underdog NFL, the Chiefs have been calling around for a receiver. That update landed after Kansas City’s 20–3 loss to Seattle, a game in which its wideouts combined for just 39 receiving yards. Shopping suddenly sounded pretty reasonable.
There’s already a growing list ofreceiver suggestions for the Chiefs. Dan Orlovsky floated Wilson, George Pickens and Brian Thomas Jr. while discussing Kansas City’s offensive problems. Those suggestions alone don’t establish that any of those players are available or that a deal is close.
For one fan, the report required a one-word response.
“PLEASE,” one fan wrote while sharing an image of Wilson in a Chiefs jersey.
“Free him,” another added about Wilson, who ranks 15th on PFN’s WR Impact Metric.
“Let’s save this demon Veach 😈,” another fan wrote, asking Chiefs general manager Brett Veach to get Wilson from the Jets.
The enthusiasm came with a healthy helping of skepticism. Calling other teams is the easy part. Getting a player who makes a difference is where fans want to see some evidence.
“This is a nothing burger. Always is. Even if they do bring in a WR, it will be an extremely underwhelming move,”one fan wrote.
Another fan delivered the entire joke in one sentence.
“They’ve been calling but no one has picked up,”the fan wrote.
Wilson’s name got some fans dreaming big. One went ahead and put an imaginary announcement on the evening schedule.
“Garrett Wilson in KC red announced tn,”one fan wrote.
Another had a longer proposal, complete with an offseason roster move to help pay for it.
“Call the Jets and get Garret Wilson . After Chris Jones is cut this offseason, the money will be there,”another fan wrote.
That’s a fan’s proposed plan, including the suggestion about Chris Jones. Neither a Wilson trade nor a Jones release was established by the report about Kansas City making calls. The reaction does capture how quickly deadline chatter can turn into fans rebuilding half the roster.
Wilson also had competition on the wish list.
“Calvin Ridley to the Chiefs, calling it now,”another fan predicted.
Pro Football Network offered a familiar name in its response.
The reactions leave Veach with a predictable audience. Some fans want a splash. Some would welcome almost any help. Others are bracing for a move that barely registers.
For the skeptics, another report about phone calls won’t do much. They’re waiting to see who actually walks through the door.
