With the 11th pick in this year’s draft, the Golden State Warriors picked an older, proven player to add to their already aging roster: Yaxel Lendeborg. The Warriors coaching staff has had high praise for the rookie through the preseason. They have even gone as far as saying he is the most pro-ready player they have seen.
Head Coach Steve Kerr is reluctant to play rookies, as people have seen with Jonathan Kuminga. However, these comments made by Kerr and staff hinted that Lendeborg will carry a significant role this year. The coaching staff and players on the team have praised the rookie for his work ethic, maturity, and his great feel for the game.
With the Warriors still looking to add depth with Jimmy Butler III and Kristaps Porzingis being out, the organization will be depending on him. Kerr’s early trust in Lendeborg signals that the transition period between college and the NBA will not be big. If Lendeborg is able to produce on a nightly basis, with his defensive versatility, relentless rebounding, and aggressive scoring mentality, he could cement himself as one of the more impactful rookies in the class.
The Warriors lottery pick has a clear path that will allow him to play 30 minutes or more this season. This comes as a result of injuries. Both Jimmy Butler III and Moses Moody will be sidelined this season for a significant amount of time. The depth at the wing position is extremely thin for this Warriors squad. It is up to Lendeborg to take full advantage of this opportunity and produce effective, impactful minutes.
With Al Horford aging, it will be difficult for him to play on back-to-back nights. This allows for Lendeborg to take on more of an opportunity. On top of this, Kerr and staff will need to monitor Draymond Green’s minutes in a conservative manner to avoid another injury. These reasons alone open up more forward minutes for Lendeborg to take.
The Warriors expect nothing less than for Lendeborg to be a contributor right away based on his performances in summer league and training camp. With many opportunities open for him to be a key offensive player, the Warriors will be challenging Lendeborg to be more aggressive on offense and for him to adapt to the mindset of an elite scorer. This form of coaching suggests the Warriors are looking to use their rookie in close-game situations.
In order to take home the Rookie of the Year Award, a case can only be made if the player consistently plays a heavy load of minutes. Last season, VJ Edgecombe, who was in a similar position to Lendeborg, averaged 35 minutes per game last season. These heavy minutes allowed Edgecombe to finish 3rd in Rookie of the Year voting in 2025-26.
Kerr and the Warriors already have a significant amount of trust in their rookie. This will allow him the freedom he needs on the court to showcase his skill set. If he rises to the occasion with his aggressive offensive mindset and defensive awareness, the Warriors will have no choice but to continue to increase his role and give him more responsibilities.
This would boost his Rookie of the Year odds considerably.
Yaxel Lendeborg’s rapid progression suggests that he can be a key contributor sooner rather than later. With UAB Birmingham, he took home the defensive player of the year award twice while also earning All-Conference honors.
People around college basketball expected the UAB transfer to be good, but they did not see him having the year he did. In Michigan’s dominant championship season, Lendeborg earned 2025-26 Big 10 Player of the Year, consensus All-American, and All-Big 10 defensive honors. His impact was heavily felt by his opponents.
Last season, he averaged 15.1 ppg and 6.8 rebounds while shooting 37.2% from three and 51.5% from the field. As if this were not impressive enough, he had a win share of 7.9. This stat alone shows how important and impactful he was to Michigan’s historic season.
On the defensive end of the court, Lendeborg is an elite, versatile defender who can switch 1-4. His six-foot-nine frame and seven-foot-four wingspan allow him to have this versatility. His high IQ for the game allows him to process the game at a faster pace than most players on the floor, which allows him to use his length and wingspan to create turnovers and easy transition points.
The former Michigan star provides excellent weak-side rim protection. Lendeborg is always bringing the intensity every night. His physicality and toughness enable him to be a defensive anchor for his team.
Lendeborg possesses a great feel for the game on offense also. He is a good passer for someone his size. His high IQ makes it easy for him to move the ball around the court quickly to move the defense around. This creates easy scoring chances for his teammates.
He does an excellent job of making the right reads on handoffs and short rolls. His ability to impact the game without needing the ball in his hands is what makes him an intriguing player. Lendeborg is always cutting to the basket and crashing the offensive boards, where he loves to create and convert off second-chance efforts.
Lendeborg utilizes his frame to finish through contact at and around the rim. He is an efficient scorer from the perimeter. The wing is a monstrous threat in pick-and-rolls and sets hard screens on defenders, giving Lendeborg the option to either dive inside or pop out for an outside shot. This makes defenses pick their poison when guarding him in these situations.
The Warriors’ new addition has continued to work on his outside shot. Last season, he was an effective shooter from beyond the arc for the Wolverines.
