‘Maybe I shouldn’t even be on the touchline’ – Allegri enraged by red card

Massimiliano Allegri was enraged by his late red card in the draw with Roma, claiming he "shouldn't even be on the touchline", but believes Napoli have what it takes to move up the table.

Napoli twice gave up a lead against Roma in a thrilling draw – they had led 2-0 in the 48th minute after goals on either side of half-time from Frank Anguissa and Scott McTominay.

Matias Soule and Leonardo Balerdi then levelled the score with two goals in five minutes before McTominay's second of the match put Napoli back in front in the 83rd minute.

However, Napoli failed to hold on until the end, with Balerdi equalising for the second time, and Allegri was sent off in the aftermath for dissent as he felt the Argentinian had committed a foul on Sam Beukema in the build-up.

"The fourth official called the referee and got me sent off, but I said absolutely nothing," Allegri told DAZN Italia.

"Next time I will have to sit on the bench and not move, because every time I move, I get sent off. I had to pay €80,000 in fines last season, so maybe I shouldn't even be on the touchline from now on.

"I see others who practically run onto the pitch, and nobody says anything; when I move, I'm punished."

"I thank the fourth official, and for the rest, I can only congratulate the lads for their performance," he added sarcastically.

A win over Roma would have massively helped Napoli make moves up the table, but despite winning the expected goals (xG) battle 2.4 to 1.9, they could not turn it into three points and instead sit 10th.

Allegri remains under scrutiny at Napoli, with their leaky defence causing them problems – they have conceded six goals this week across two games in all competitions (also a 4-3 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League).

"I think the team played well, also defensively, against a strong side," Allegri added.

"We had the chance to go 3-0 up; we then had the lead at 3-2 but conceded again. If we play with this spirit, we will climb the table.

"I changed my way of playing now; it is all on the attack. Since the start of the season, I even try to use four strikers if I can.

"Unfortunately, we've dropped a lot of points along the way. I'm still angry at the way the game ended, so I'm perhaps lacking sharpness in evaluating how the match went."
