In arguably the biggest upset of Week 7 of the NFL season, former Washington Huskies star quarterback Michael Penix Jr. led the Atlanta Falcons to a 29-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
After coming into the week at 6-0 as one of the league's three undefeated teams, the 49ers committed four turnovers inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and Penix was quick to take advantage of them. He completed 25 of his 34 pass attempts for 213 yards and 3 touchdowns on the day.
On National Tight Ends Day, Penix connected with tight ends Kyle Pitts Sr. and Nick Muse for two of his three scores, while his favorite target, wide receiver Drake London, led all Falcons pass catchers with 7 receptions for 66 yards and his first touchdown of the season. London's score came on the first snap of the fourth quarter for a 21-yard score to extend Atlanta's lead to 26-14, as the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 draft had to silence plenty of San Francisco fans in attendance.
In recent weeks, opposing fans invading Atlanta has been a hot-button topic, as Penix discussed having to use a silent count during the Falcons' 31-23 loss at home to the Chicago Bears in Week 6, but the left-hander seemed unfazed by it in the win.
“The crowd noise thing, it’s always tough, whenever you’re playing at home, and you hear early in the week, it’s like, ‘We might got to work silent cadence,’” Penix said after the loss to the Bears. “Because you always expect our fans will overrule the opponents’ fans. But we were ready for it.”
That was Atlanta's first win inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium this season, as the Falcons improved to 3-4 on the year with the win. Next, they'll hit the road to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, November 1.
