Week 7 Fantasy Football Matchups to Exploit: 4 players you should start, including a struggling elite quarterback

Jaylen Warren is playing the best football of his career, while Dak Prescott, Matthew Golden and Ollie Gordon II have opportunities to deliver in favorable spots.

A favorable matchup cannot rescue a player who is not getting the football. We want players with established roles, reliable volume and an opponent that can help turn those opportunities into fantasy production.

That brings us to four players from four different teams. Warren is the strongest play of the group. Prescott has a chance to rebound, Golden has legitimate WR1 overall upside and Gordon is an aggressive flex option for managers dealing with injuries or bye weeks.

Jaylen Warren, RB, Steelers vs. Saints

This is an international game in Paris, France, with a 9:30 a.m. ET kickoff, but the Steelers are winning games right now. Aaron Rodgers has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL over the past month, and Warren is giving Pittsburgh a dangerous option on the ground.

Over his last four games, Warren has handled 63 carries and has drawn 20 targets. He ran for 127 yards against Cincinnati, produced 126 total yards against Cleveland and then exploded for 188 total yards with two touchdowns against Indianapolis.

Tampa Bay held him to 78 total yards last week, but Warren still played 75% of the offensive snaps and handled 18 opportunities. The role remains strong, even when the fantasy result is not spectacular.

Rico Dowdle has a role. He serves a purpose in this backfield, but he is also dealing with a knee injury. Warren has been the more dangerous player and the back Pittsburgh can use on the ground or through the passing game.

Now, he gets a Saints defense allowing 29.7 fantasy points per game to running backs, the highest mark in the league. New Orleans is also allowing 4.88 yards per carry to the position and has surrendered the league’s highest rushing success rate to opposing backs.

Pittsburgh enters this game as the better team. If the Steelers can play from ahead, Warren should remain involved throughout the afternoon. Even if New Orleans forces Rodgers to throw, Warren’s receiving role keeps him on the field.

I am not staying away from Warren at all. The matchup is right, the workload is secure and he is playing with more explosiveness than we have seen from him at any point in his career. Warren is a firm RB2 with the upside to finish inside the top 12.

Dak Prescott, QB, Cowboys at Eagles

It has not been pretty for Prescott over the last two weeks. He threw for 574 combined yards against Tampa Bay and Green Bay, but that production came with only two touchdown passes and four interceptions. He finished outside the top-20 fantasy quarterbacks in both games.

I understand why fantasy managers are frustrated. I am still willing to go back to him against Philadelphia.

The volume has not disappeared. Prescott attempted 42 passes against Tampa Bay and a season-high 54 against Green Bay. He has thrown for more than 250 yards in five consecutive games. Dallas is still putting the offense on his shoulders, even if the touchdowns have not followed recently.

Philadelphia has allowed at least 19 fantasy points to four of the last five quarterbacks it has faced. The Eagles are not generating consistent pressure, either. Their pressure rate ranks in the bottom half of the league, which should give Prescott more time to let routes develop.

That matters with the weapons Dallas can put on the field. CeeDee Lamb can win from anywhere. George Pickens gives Prescott a vertical option, and Ryan Flournoy can work underneath when Philadelphia tries to limit explosive plays.

Prescott must take better care of the football. I am not ignoring four interceptions in two games. The point is that the passing volume, available weapons and matchup give him a clear path back to useful fantasy production.

Dallas may not need Prescott to attempt another 50 passes, but 35 to 40 attempts should be enough. Philadelphia has struggled to contain opposing quarterbacks, and this is a divisional game Dallas needs to win.

I have Prescott back in the low-end QB1 conversation. If you have been streaming quarterbacks or deciding between Dak and Patrick Mahomes in a difficult matchup at Seattle, I prefer Prescott this week.

Matthew Golden, WR, Packers at Lions

Golden is not a speculative young receiver anymore. He has become one of the central pieces of Green Bay’s passing game.

Over the last four games, Golden has drawn 39 targets, caught 20 passes and produced 348 receiving yards with three touchdowns. He has exceeded 100 receiving yards in three of those four games.

Last week against Dallas, Golden received 13 targets and finished with six catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. That represented a 32.5% target share, his highest mark of the season. The Packers are not simply manufacturing a few touches for him. Jordan Love is looking for Golden when Green Bay needs to move the football.

This matchup fits the way Love and Golden are playing. Love leads the league in attempts traveling at least 20 yards downfield. Detroit ranks last in passing yards allowed per game and has been one of the NFL’s worst defenses against deep throws.

That is where Golden can hurt them. He has the speed to win vertically, but his recent target totals show that he does not need one long touchdown to save his fantasy day. Green Bay is using him throughout the formation and giving him opportunities at multiple levels of the field.

This game also carries the highest projected point total of Week 7 at 53.5. Detroit can score, which should keep Green Bay aggressive instead of allowing the Packers to protect a lead with their running game.

The one thing we need to monitor is Golden’s shoulder injury. He was limited during the first two practices of the week. That is not enough to move me away from him, but fantasy managers need to check his final designation before Sunday.

If Golden is cleared, I am starting him as a strong WR2. The target volume gives him a stable floor, and this matchup gives him a legitimate WR1 ceiling.

Ollie Gordon II, RB, Dolphins at Jets

Gordon is the aggressive play of the week. De’Von Achane is out for the season, and Miami has reshaped its running game around Gordon’s size and downhill style.

Over his last three games, Gordon has carried the ball 44 times for 229 yards and three touchdowns. That is 5.2 yards per carry. He ran for 100 yards on nine attempts against Minnesota, then followed it with 18 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown against Cincinnati.

That second performance may be more important for fantasy managers. We already knew Gordon could create an explosive run. Receiving 18 carries showed that Miami is willing to give him a legitimate lead-back workload.

Gordon has scored in all three games since taking over the backfield. He is forcing missed tackles, creating explosive runs and consistently getting more yardage than Miami’s blocking provides.

Now he faces a Jets defense allowing 105.8 rushing yards per game to running backs, the sixth-highest total in the league. New York ranks in the bottom third of the league in adjusted rushing yards allowed, while Miami’s offensive line has been creating enough room for Gordon to get downhill.

The concern is the game environment. Miami is an underdog in one of the lowest-total games of the week. Gordon also has limited receiving involvement, so he could be vulnerable if the Dolphins fall behind early.

I am willing to accept that risk because the rushing volume is real. Gordon does not need 25 touches to help fantasy managers. If he receives another 15 to 18 carries, his efficiency and goal-line role give him a chance to finish as an RB2.
