Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim was struck on the hand while batting in the nets on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, as the side completed its final preparations ahead of the opening Test against West Indies. The incident raised concerns over his fitness, with the full extent of the damage yet to be determined.
Mushfiqur was administered ice treatment at the ground and left the session before its conclusion. The first Test of the two-match series, part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle, is scheduled to begin on October 28 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has not issued a formal medical statement detailing the severity of the injury or a possible return date.
The finger complaint reportedly first emerged during Bangladesh's first ODI against Afghanistan. Therefore, the blow sustained during Tuesday's net session may have aggravated a pre-existing problem rather than caused an entirely new injury. However, the precise connection between the earlier complaint and the latest incident has not been officially confirmed by the team management or the BCB.
As of October 27, no diagnosis specifying the exact nature of the damage has been made public, and no recovery timeline has been communicated. Mushfiqur received on-site ice treatment at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium before leaving the session, with further updates awaited ahead of the opening Test.
Meanwhile, pace bowler Taskin Ahmed has returned to Bangladesh's squad for the opening Test against West Indies. The BCB announced a 15-member squad on Friday, October 23, with Taskin replacing fellow pacer Khaled Ahmed.
Taskin had been rested for Bangladesh's one-off Test against Afghanistan. Opener Soumya Sarkar, who was part of the squad for that match, has also been left out of the squad for the West Indies series.
Ashraful axed as Bangladesh batting coach
Bangladesh will, however, be without fast bowler Nahid Rana for the opening Test. Rana is currently in Australia for an assessment of his longstanding injury and is also unlikely to return for the second Test.
Bangladesh have named a 15-member squad for the opening Test, with Najmul Hossain Shanto leading the side. Mushfiqur Rahim is part of the squad, although his availability remains a concern following the latest injury scare.
Bangladesh squad: Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Shadman Islam, Tanzid Hasan, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das, Towhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali, Mehidy Hasan Miraz (vc), Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam.
