‘(Garrett) Wilson Wasting His Career,’ ‘Trade Him’ — NFL Fans Take Notice as Footage Captures Jets WR Mouthing Off at Geno Smith

Garrett Wilson’s frustration boiled over on Sunday. The New York Jets’ star receiver had two catches for 26 yards on three targets, and cameras caught him yelling in Geno Smith’s direction on the bench in the fourth quarter of a 28-25 home loss to the previously winless Miami Dolphins.

As footage made its way online, several fans sided with Wilson, and a few of them even pushed for a trade.

NFL Fans React to Garrett Wilson’s Frustrating Moment vs. Dolphins

On Oct. 18 against the New England Patriots, Wilson drew only two targets through three quarters. On Sunday, he wasn’t targeted at all in the first half, as the Jets fell behind 21-7 and were booed loudly at the break. His first catch came during the Jets’ opening drive of the third quarter, and he was targeted only twice more.

Underdog shared the clip Sunday afternoon, with Wilson appearing to yell in Smith’s direction. ESPN reported that his frustration appeared to be aimed at passing-game coordinator Seth Ryan, who was seated beside Smith.

Afterward, Wilson gave his account of the moment: “I don’t even think I was talking to Geno. I think we were both heated, but not at each other at all. We were just disappointed with how we were playing up to that point and wanted to be a little more aggressive. That’s what that was.”

Smith told the same story: “He might have been yelling, but I don’t think he was yelling at me.”

However, one fan blamed the organization: “Wilson wasting his career with the inept Jets.”

Another fan brought up Omar Cooper Jr., who led the Jets in receiving yards on Sunday: “He’s borderline ready to check out. They might as well trade him with the emergence of Cooper. I just hope he gets a chip because he’s a solid dude whose talent is being wasted by this franchise’s ineptitude.”

A third fan kept it short: “Free this man from this misery.”

Another fan had a destination in mind: “Trade him to the Steelers.”

One more fan preferred a different landing spot: “Trade him to the Chiefs.”

The Jets were booed again at the final whistle. Coach Aaron Glenn said postgame: “I understand the fans’ frustration — I really do. I promise you, I do, but the thing is, I do feel like, man, this program is going in the right direction.”

Glenn also spoke about Wilson’s targets: “A player of his magnitude, we have to do everything we can to try to get him the ball.” Glenn then put Wilson’s lack of targets on himself, saying getting him the ball was part of the game plan.

Wilson’s 37 catches through Week 7 are tied for 11th in the NFL, and his 444 receiving yards rank 18th. Pro Football Network’s NFL WR Impact Grade had him at 82.5 entering Week 7, 12th of 82 graded wide receivers.

His next chance to get the ball comes next Sunday, Nov. 1. That’s when the Jets, third in the AFC East, host the Las Vegas Raiders at MetLife Stadium.
