Two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson has missed the Baltimore Ravens’ last three games with a high ankle sprain sustained in a Week 4 clash against the Tennessee Titans. Ravens head coach Jesse Minter was optimistic about Jackson being available to play in Baltimore’s Week 8 clash against the Buffalo Bills, but the quarterback’s availability has been in limbo for a while now.
Naturally, the focus has been placed on whether a franchise can rely on Jackson to lead it to a Super Bowl, with Colin Cowherd among the names sowing the seed of doubt in that regard. But as Cowherd explained his stance, fans wasted little time pushing back.
During Tuesday’s segment of “The Herd,” Cowherd dismissed Jackson’s credentials as a quarterback who can lead his team to Super Bowl glory due to the uncertainty around his availability and future in Baltimore.
“I said during the offseason that I’m done with Lamar Jackson as a Super Bowl quarterback,” Cowherd said. “He’s talented; it’s too noisy. It’s too weird, you know? Lamar’s got his mom still negotiating. I’m not saying either is wrong, but they’re different.”
That take did not land well.
One fan accused Cowherd of using Jackson to garner more engagement.
“Why does Coward always use Lamar’s name for engagement? The views must be low,” the fan wrote.
Another fan explained that injury reporting is an organizational decision and that the team decides whether a player is available.
“Thin slicing doesn’t mean consistent… your takes treat similar situations differently. A high-ankle sprain is typically 4 weeks… Injury reporting is an organization decision. DtD, in or out, this week or next – all decisions made by the team. Stop it!” The fan detailed.
One fan questioned why Cowherd did not apply the same standards to Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, who missed three games after the same day-to-day designation.
“No issues when Caleb Williams misses 3 games after the initial report was day-to-day and refused to tell the severity of his injury? But you have issues and speculation when Lamar Jackson comes out and tells us the severity of his injury?” the fan remarked.
Another was unimpressed by Cowherd’s latest tangent about Jackson. “You already ran this gimmick in the offseason,” the fan remarked.
One fan was infuriated by Cowherd’s consistently controversial opinions and questioned the show’s viewership. “Who watches this clown show?” the fan asked.
Another fan mocked Cowherd’s comments with a hilarious prediction. “This is good news for Ravens fans because whatever Colin says, the opposite tends to happen.”
Jackson was a limited participant all of last week, but was ruled out for the Week 7 clash against the Cincinnati Bengals, and Minter declined to comment on a CBS pregame report that the quarterback woke up on Saturday with increased swelling in his injured ankle.
Before his injury, Jackson had amassed 967 passing yards on 70.8% completion, 6 touchdowns and 1 interception, adding 144 rushing yards and 1 score, earning a PFN QB Impact score of 86.9 (No. 2 in the league).
The Ravens have a 1-2 record without Jackson this season and are averaging 17.7 points and 328.3 yards per game with Tyler Huntley under center. Baltimore has earned a PFN Offense Impact score of 76.0 (No. 11 in the NFL) so far and is in last place in the AFC North, with a 4-3 record.
Despite his individual success in the NFL, Jackson has a 3-5 playoff record and has been chastised for not reaching a Super Bowl. Coach John Harbaugh was sacked last year after the Ravens missed the playoffs and was accused of failing to capitalize on Jackson’s brilliance to reach the Super Bowl.
