Abhishek Sharma brought a traditional Punjabi touch to Team India's motivational address ahead of the first T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch on October 22, 2026. The Indian batter delivered an energetic speech that blended tactical reflection with cultural expression, setting the tone for a chase that would become India's highest-ever T20I run pursuit.
India faced a target of 226 runs after New Zealand posted 225 for 4 wickets, their highest total in home T20Is. Abhishek opened the innings alongside Sanju Samson and struck immediately, hitting the first ball for six. The opening pair built a 93-run stand in 35 balls, with Samson scoring 67 off 33 balls including 8 fours and 4 sixes, while Abhishek contributed 29 off 12 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes before being caught at short third.
He addressed the team with tactical clarity, emphasizing the need to treat opponents with respect rather than familiarity.
"Few things from my side. I think against West Indies we did few mistakes, that we played them as our friends," Abhishek said in a video released by BCCI.
"I think same with these guys. They (NZ) are going to challenge us in that way as well. So, let us show them why we are world champions. We are going to dominate here, and we are going to win from the very first game," he added.
Beyond the English-language address, Abhishek introduced a traditional Punjabi verse to energise the squad. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and the entire team responded with laughter, smiles and cheers as Abhishek brought cultural pride to the pre-match preparation. He recited the motivational phrase with conviction, explaining its significance to the team's mindset.
Phillips praises Sanju-Abhishek opening pair
"And in Punjabi we say, if we rhyme well, we will perform well. So, Bari Barsi Khatan Gaya Si, Khatke Leanda Hand... Bari Barsi Khatan Gaya Si, Khatke Leanda Hand... Chalo Aaj Aapa Pehla Jitiye Match In New Zealand!" Abhishek said.
New Zealand's innings was built on aggressive batting from multiple contributors. Glenn Phillips remained unbeaten on 82 off 40 balls, striking 8 fours and 3 sixes. Finn Allen scored 45 off 24 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes, while Bevon Jacobs added 31 off 16 balls including 3 sixes. India's bowling attack struggled with control, as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, returning after four years, conceded 49 runs across 4 overs. Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav and Axar Patel each took one wicket but each leaked more than 10 runs per over.
India's chase began positively with the Samson-Abhishek opening stand of 93 runs, but the team collapsed from 93 for 1 to 122 for 4. Skipper Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel steadied the innings with a 45-run partnership. Iyer scored 42 off 28 balls with 1 four and 2 sixes, while Axar contributed 24 off 14 balls including 3 fours and 1 six. Naman Dhir finished the chase with an unbeaten 42 off 15 balls, striking 5 fours and 2 sixes, as India secured a 5-wicket victory in 19.4 overs to claim a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
