Former India National Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma once again showed his funny side with a witty response about a possible return to T20I cricket after the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 on his TV show, ‘Family Full House with Rohit Sharma’.
He made a humorous remark about keeping India’s current Test and ODI captain, Shubman Gill, and T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer, happy to play in the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 and make a T20I comeback for the 2028 T20 World Cup. Rohit’s funny response has sparked fresh discussion online, as he already retired from T20I cricket after leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title in Barbados.
The experienced opener Rohit Sharma is now focused on the ICC ODI World Cup 2027, having retired from Test and T20I cricket, and he is preparing to return to action in India's upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting on November 4.
During his Sony TV show ‘Family Full House with Rohit Sharma,’ actor Karan Wahi said, “Let's play a game with you,” and asked the former Indian captain, "Whom would he call in an emergency, Shreyas Iyer or Shubman Gill?" Rohit came up with a hilarious answer that made the people present there burst into loud laughter.
Rohit said that he needed both players because Gill is currently his captain and he wanted to play in the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. The senior opener jokingly added that he would also need to keep Iyer happy if he wanted to make a T20I comeback for T20 World Cup 2028.
The former Indian captain jokingly said, “Both are Captain of India now. Gill is my captain right now, and I want to play the 2027 World Cup, so I have to keep him happy. After 2027 WC, if I want to make a comeback in T20I. I'll have to keep Shreyas happy. So, I need both of them.”

Rohit will play under both captains Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer during India's upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand next month. The ODI series will begin in Auckland on November 4 and conclude in Mount Maunganui on November 15.
Gill will lead India in the first three matches before stepping aside, along with KL Rahul, to prepare for the first Test against New Zealand in Wellington, starting November 19.
Iyer will take charge of the final two ODIs. He has already guided India to a 2-0 lead in the T20I leg of the ongoing tour of New Zealand. The second T20I is scheduled for October 27 in Wellinton. Amid this, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant likely to feature in India A’s third Test before New Zealand series.
Rohit's strong ODI performances keep him in India's 2027 ICC ODI World Cup plans presently. In his last 10 ODIs, the right-hander has scored 554 runs at an average of 55.40 and a strike rate of 110.50. His recent performances include a brilliant 138 off 110 balls against England at Lord's and a stunning 101 off 75 balls against the West Indies in Guwahati.
The veteran will be 40 years old in April 2027, but his current form keeps his World Cup dreams alive. Rohit had scored 597 runs at an average of 125.94 in the tournament but his highest score was 118 in India’s loss to Australia in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup in Ahmedabad. That was also the match that ended India’s dream of winning the World Cup.
India will take on Australia at Cape Town in their first match of the 2027 ODI World Cup on October 7, 2027. Rohit's explosive batting during the powerplay and his experience on the field could be extremely important for India in the mega event.
