Cricket pundits were taken by surprise when the Australian National Cricket Team captain, Pat Cummins, elected to bowl first against the South African National Cricket Team on a surface that was not looking favorable for the bowlers, even when it was fresh. Why did Cummins decide to bowl first in Cape Town remains an unsolved question.
When the cricket experts were criticizing Pat Cummins' decision, former England captain Michael Vaughan mentioned Nasser Hussain's infamous Brisbane toss decision.
The sun was shining, and the sky was blue when Cummins and the South African skipper Temba Bavuma went for the toss. Batting first would be a no-brainer call, but the Aussie captain took a completely different route. So far in the match, the fast bowlers of the Australian bowling line-up have been unable to do much. Even the fuller-length deliveries have lacked threatening elements to the opposing batting.
Pat Cummins had an explanation behind his call. He stated that they felt the surface had some moisture, which they wanted to utilise by bowling first.
"We’re going to have a bowl; it feels like there’s a little bit of moisture in the wicket today. So have first use of it," Cummins said at the toss.
Why did Michael Vaughan compare Cummins' decision with Nasser Hussain's infamous Brisbane toss call? In the 2002–03 Ashes series at the Gabba in Brisbane, Nasser Hussain, who was then the captain of the England cricket team, surprisingly chose to bowl first under the sub-tropical conditions.
While batting first would be an easy choice, he chose to bowl first to test his young bowlers. Fielding first eventually did not work in favour of the England cricket team against their arch rivals.
With Matthew Hayden's 197 and Ricky Ponting's 123, Australia got 364 for 2 by the end of the first day. Australia registered 492 runs in their first innings, defeated Nasser Hussain's England by 384 runs, and won the 5-Test Ashes series by 4-1.
By comparing Pat Cummins with Nasser Hussain's infamous Brisbane toss decision, Michael Vaughan predicted a possible crushing defeat for Australia against South Africa. If South Africa wins the Cape Town match, then they will win the 3-match Test series by 2-1.
"This feels like Nasser in Brisbane decision," Vaughan wrote this. "Glorious day in Cape Town and the Aussies decide to bowl… Very, very unlike Australia," he further stated in a different 'X' post on October 27.

Talking about the ongoing Cape Town Test match, South Africa is currently with 218 runs for 4 wickets. The home team has a strong platform to establish a big total in the first innings as their openers, Aiden Markram (78 runs) and Marques Ackerman (95 runs), stitched a 158-run partnership for the first wicket. Bavuma, meanwhile, was disappointing, as he was dismissed for a duck. Matthew Breetzke departed after scoring only a couple of runs.
