Harry Brook scores first ODI double century by an England batter, breaks fastest 200 record

England captain Harry Brook scored 202 runs off 114 balls against Sri Lanka in the third fixture of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series at Rawalpindi on October 22, 2026, becoming the first England batter in history to reach a double century in one-day international cricket.

Brook's knock is also the fastest double century in ODI history, surpassing the previous record of 117 balls held by India's Shubman Gill. He was dismissed off the very last delivery of England's innings, having batted till the final ball of the innings and struck 21 fours and 10 sixes in his 202-run effort.

England finished on 429 for 4, the highest ODI total ever posted on Pakistani soil. Brook's 202 moved past Ben Stokes' 182 against New Zealand at The Oval in 2023 to become England's highest individual score in the format.

What records did Brook break with his innings of 202?

Brook's innings rewrote several ODI record entries in a single afternoon at Rawalpindi. The most significant is the fastest double century in the format's history. Gill had just recently set that mark at 117 balls, and Brook bettered it by three deliveries, reaching the milestone in 114 balls.

Brook also became the first England batter to score a double century in ODIs, a landmark that had gone unclaimed across more than five decades of England's one-day international history. His 202 is now England's highest individual ODI score, moving past Stokes' 182 from 2023.

This was Brook's fourth ODI century, with all four milestone innings coming when he has been captain of the side. Alongside Sir Alistair Cook and Sir Andrew Strauss, Brook now has the joint-second most ODI centuries as England captain, behind Eoin Morgan, who has nine to his name. His 202 is also the fourth double century and fourth-highest score by a captain in ODIs, behind Gill's 223, Virender Sehwag's 219 in 2011 and Rohit Sharma's unbeaten 208 in 2017.

Brook also became the second non-opener to score an ODI double century, following Glenn Maxwell's single-handed rescue mission against Afghanistan in Mumbai in 2023. He now stands tall as just the second player after Chris Gayle to have recorded a century in T20Is, a double-century in ODIs and a triple-century in Test matches. Brook's Test triple-ton was also scored in Rawalpindi in 2024.

England's team total of 429 for 4 added a further record as the highest ODI score posted on Pakistani soil, and their fourth-highest ODI total, underlining the scale of the batting performance on the day.

How did Brook build his innings at Rawalpindi?

Brook shared partnerships of 159 with Joe Root and 185 runs with Will Jacks, with the second stand giving England's innings considerable momentum and pushing the total towards record territory. Brook was leading the side as captain throughout the match, the third fixture of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series 2026.

He batted through to the final delivery of the 50th over before being dismissed, meaning England lost his wicket only at the very end of their allotted overs. His 202 came off just 114 balls, a strike rate that reflects the remarkable pace at which he reached the double-century landmark, with his 10 sixes and 21 fours accounting for a substantial portion of the runs scored.

The partnership with Jacks and Brook's ability to sustain his scoring rate deep into the innings were central to England reaching 429 for 4, a total that set a new benchmark for ODI cricket played in Pakistan.
