What Michael Carrick said to Man Utd players after they were booed off against Bournemouth speaks volumes

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has revealed the words he offered, or lack thereof, to his Red Devils squad after they received boos at Old Trafford.

The Englishman confessed that he hadn’t discussed the reaction from the Old Trafford faithful with his squad after the match, in which they lost 3-0 to Bournemouth.

Carrick added that he didn’t plan on discussing such matters in the changing room, with “a lot of the boys quite hurt, to be fair, [and] disappointed with the situation.”

Michael Carrick reveals his response to Manchester United squad after they and the club’s hierarchy received boos at Old Trafford

The Stretford End chanted passionately for Carrick as he made his way across to supporters around Old Trafford; however, the crowd quickly turned on the Manchester United players and hierarchy.

Many have theorised that the fanbase’s positive response to seeing Carrick, after he led his Red Devils squad to a second drubbing in three days, was an acknowledgment of his imminent departure from Manchester.

The Englishman admitted that he heard the reaction from the tunnel, and that he also spoke to individual Manchester United players post-match.

However, the 45-year-old claimed that such a topic wasn’t “a thing to discuss in the changing room,” as the situation at Old Trafford was highly charged emotionally.

"No, it's not a thing to discuss in the changing room after the game too much, to be honest,” began the Red Devils boss. "There's a lot of emotion. In the changing room right now, there's a lot of disappointment.

A lot of the boys [are] quite hurt, to be fair, disappointed with the situation. It's not like they don't care, or they want to be in this position. You know, this is the position we all find ourselves in.

“The ones I've spoken to, I've not spoken to everyone individually, it's affecting them a lot, as you can see really with the performance. How much it's not gone our way, and we've not made it go our way.

“There's only so much really, because of the way the game ended. The atmosphere in the stadium, the dynamics, and trying to almost spend some time trying to digest that and see what that means,” concluded Carrick.

Michael Carrick acknowledges fan support and concerns after Manchester United suffer back-to-back drubbings against Como and Bournemouth

The supporters booed off the Manchester United cohort that fell so brutally to Bournemouth, and Como in the week, then aimed negative chants at the Glazers, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Jason Wilcox.

On what it meant to him to hear the Old Trafford faithful support him, Carrick said: “Really mixed emotions. Probably didn’t expect that off [of] the supporters, if I’m honest.

“But I've always felt the support and always felt that connection with them anyway. Probably sick of me saying all the time, of the amount of times I've sat here and said it, of the respect that I have for them, and for them to kind of show that back meant an awful lot.

"But [we’re in] such a difficult situation, and [to] go through a day like we have done, in a spell like we have done, is certainly difficult to take. So there's real mixed emotions in there for sure."

Carrick also addressed the outcry from fans to see members of the Manchester United hierarchy take questions after events like the Bournemouth loss, claiming “it’s not for me to say who speaks.”

Both Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada received scathing chants from Old Trafford; Wilcox hasn’t given an external interview during his time in Manchester, while Berrada hasn’t spoken to external media since early 2025.

"It's not for me to say who speaks, who doesn't speak, when they speak, how they speak," said Carrick. "I know my role here [is] to speak to you guys, and represent the team and the football club as best as I possibly can from this position.

"As I said about the atmosphere in the stadium, the feelings [from] supporters, the frustration, the disappointment, it gives me really mixed feelings. It was a difficult day, for sure."
