How 'Chaos Saturday' upsets help Texas Longhorns keep CFP hopes alive

Texas suffered a bad loss Saturday to unranked Florida. But the Longhorns weren't alone as five of the top seven lost. This is good news for Texas.

The Southeastern Conference's official X (Twitter) account posted one word: "CHAOS." Saturday was a day of chaos across college football, especially in the SEC. The No. 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 teams in the nation all lost in an "Upset Saturday" for the ages. And most of those upsets help keep the Texas Longhorns College Football Playoffs alive.

To address the elephant in the room, if the Longhorns don't improve, fix their biggest problems and win going forward, this is all moot. But what felt like a playoff-killing loss to Florida early in the day, now seems like just one of many shocking results that will shake up the final 12 team CFP bracket.

The Longhorns now have two losses. As we saw last year, a team with three losses has a very hard time making the CFP in its current format. But that might not be the case this year. The two big conferences are cannibalizing each other. Especially the SEC.

There are no teams in the SEC with a perfect conference record. In fact, there are only four teams with just one conference loss. No. 1 Georgia was upset by Auburn in Athens on Saturday. The Bulldogs could easily lose one of their remaining games ... or two. The same with Alabama, who lost at Tennessee.

Kentucky, Tennessee and Ole Miss all also have just one loss. But its hard to imagine either the Wildcats or Volunteers finishing that way. Ole Miss still must play Georgia and Texas. In fact, the Horns can deal the Rebels a loss next week.

Notre Dame lost to BYU, one of the only tough games on the Fighting Irish's schedule. Indiana lost for the first time today to Ohio State. Miami needed overtime and a questionable call to shake off rival Florida State. Missouri, Mississippi State and Oklahoma State are other Top 25 teams that lost Saturday.

Chaos is good for Texas. The more losses at the top of the standings and the top of the rankings gives the Longhorns more hope that, if they play better, a CFP berth is possible.

NIL is creating more parity. While the top programs can outspend many of their counterparts, they can't outspend by a wide margin. Teams like Kentucky and Mississippi State and Missouri want to compete too and have upped their own financial commitment to do so. There are very good players that have found a spot in Lexington and Starkville and Oxford and so on.

So if you're a Longhorns fan, root for the chaos. If Texas can right the ship on the field, the chaos will only help UT's CFP case later.
