BOSTON — The Boston Celtics were on the brink of disaster on Tuesday night. They had an Atlantic Division contest with the Brooklyn Nets all but won, however, a pair of missed free throws from Celtics center Mitchell Robinson led to a late fadeaway triple from Nets rookie Mikel Brown Jr. that sent the game to overtime. But, Celtics star Jayson Tatum didn't flinch, cashing a turnaround jumper at the buzzer in overtime to clinch a 125-124 victory in thrilling fashion.
Tatum scored 6 of his 40 points in overtime and didn't record a single turnover in 42 minutes of play. He also recorded 8 assists and 5 rebounds to go along with 22 attempts from the charity stripe — the most of his NBA career. Fellow Celtics starter Paul George put together a solid outing as well, scoring 20 points on 50 percent shooting.
The Nets nearly stole the win thanks to Brown Jr., yet the youngster then made a poor decision at the end of overtime. With only 2 seconds remaining, the guard went up for a layup when he probably should have held on to the ball and waited for a foul. He missed the driving shot and allowed for Tatum to get it on the other end with just enough time.
The Celtics are now 3-1 on the season and have defeated the Nets in 12 of their last 13 meetings. Brooklyn remains winless at 0-4 despite the valiant effort at TD Garden.
Boston won't get much rest, as it hosts the Chicago Bulls — who it thumped by 35 points on Monday — on Friday night.
