'More Than a Bad Game,' 'This Is a Bad Sign' — Ex-Eagles LB Sounds The Alarm as Chiefs' Stalled Offense Hits Rock Bottom in Patrick Mahomes Era

The Kansas City Chiefs rolled into Lumen Field on Sunday night unbeaten and averaging an NFL-leading 414 yards a game. They left after scoring a mere three points in their first loss of the season, a 20-3 defeat to the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and a defeat that was a historic low in the Patrick Mahomes era.

However, when former Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho broke down the game on his “Speakeasy” show postgame, he pointed to more worrying signs: “It’s more than just a bad game for the Chiefs. It’s a bad sign.”

Emmanuel Acho Points to What Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs Is Missing

Kansas City went into Seattle short-handed at receiver and tackle. Tyquan Thornton, the team’s leading receiver, dislocated his ankle in the win over the Las Vegas Raiders and will miss at least three months after surgery.

Rashee Rice has been out since hurting his hamstring in that game. Kansas City was also without starting tackle Jaylon Moore, while Josh Simmons had missed practice earlier in the week because of a back/personal matter.

Acho began with the receivers: “Remember, his top two receivers are out, and one’s not coming back in Tyquan Thornton. So Patrick Mahomes is constantly asked to make high-quality lemonade out of limes. You feel me? How are you even going to do that? He’s asked to make high-quality lemonade out of limes, and at best, poverty lemons.”

Mahomes’ longest completion on Sunday went for 19 yards. The Chiefs had piled up nearly 160 rushing yards a game through their first five outings, much of it from Kenneth Walker III, Seattle’s Super Bowl MVP last season.

Walker came into Week 7 leading the league at 133 rushing yards a game, and ranking first in PFN’s NFL RB Impact Score with his 96.5 grade.

Seattle, which hasn’t allowed a 100-yard rusher in 36 games, held its former running back to a season-low 36 yards on 14 carries with no run longer than seven yards, and Kansas City finished with 50 rushing yards on 16 carries.

Acho then pointed to the Chiefs’ run game: “If you can stop the run game, hard to do, I get it. But if you can stop the run game, now Patrick Mahomes has to rely on Xavier Worthy, who hasn’t proven himself to be a bona fide number one, and an older Travis Kelce.”

Kelce was held without a catch in the first half and finished with four grabs for 44 yards. That was enough to pass Marvin Harrison and Cris Carter for fifth on the NFL’s all-time receptions list.

Acho closed with a warning: “There are a few teams that can do to the Chiefs what the Seahawks did to the Chiefs tonight, about three or so, and when you face those three or so teams, it will be bad.”

How the Sunday Night Seahawks Loss Stacks Up in the Patrick Mahomes Era

Several lows in the Chiefs’ Mahomes era stood out during their loss to the Seahawks on Sunday night.

  • The three points tied the fewest Kansas City has scored in a game Mahomes started, matching a 27-3 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 24, 2021. It was also only the third time in his career that the Chiefs failed to reach double figures.

  • For the first time in a Mahomes start, Kansas City never reached the red zone. Its 213 yards were the lowest in a regular-season game he started, with only a 212-yard playoff win over the Houston Texans coming in lower.

  • The Chiefs also went without an explosive play (a run of at least 10 yards or a pass of at least 20) for the first time in Andy Reid’s head-coaching career.

Mahomes finished 19 of 33 for 165 yards with no touchdowns, an interception, and a 58.3 passer rating, while Kansas City managed 11 first downs and converted 3 of 11 third downs.

Harrison Butker supplied the only points with a 50-yard field goal. But he came up short from 58 as the first half expired, and in the fourth quarter he pushed a 45-yarder wide right that would have made it a one-possession game.

Kansas City is still 5-1 and first in the AFC West, a half-game ahead of the 5-2 Denver Broncos. The Chiefs visit Denver on Sunday, Nov. 1, needing a win to stay top of the division.
