The Oklahoma Sooners moved to 4-3 on the season with their 23-15 win over Mississippi State. And the score didn't fully reflect how well Oklahoma's offense played. For nine of the last 10 quarters of football dating back to the second half of the Texas game, the Oklahoma Sooners have found something offensively. Against the Bulldogs, Oklahoma did for a full four quarters.
That's largely due to the balance Ben Arbuckle maintained on offense, as well as strong play and decision-making from John Mateer. Many are calling it Mateer's best game as a Sooner. As it should have been. Mississippi State's defense has been among the worst in the SEC. But so was Kentucky's. So for the Sooners to put 467 yards of total offense on the board shows just what they're capable.
Mateer completed 76% of his passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 37 yards on nine carries, marking his best day running the ball since the Michigan game.
As important as Mateer's plays were, so were the ones he didn't make. He had no turnover-worthy plays. No throws into bad situations and no fumbles. He took care of the football, managed the game, and took shots downfield when they had them.
On the final drive of the day, Mateer made plays with his legs and his arm to convert a pair of third downs to allow Oklahoma to run out the clock.
It was a strong performance for the Oklahoma Sooners on offense, even if they only scored 23 points. And once again, it gives them something to build on as they prepare to face the South Carolina Gamecocks next week.
Here's how social media reacted to the win.
