It had already been a bumpy night at Lambeau Field for the Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers, and then came an interruption from above that nobody had planned for. With the Packers leading 20-10 and facing third-and-1 inside the Panthers’ 10 in the third quarter, an unidentified drone stopped the Week 8 game for several minutes.
Several fans watching could hardly believe what they were seeing. Others found a laugh in a Thursday Night Football matchup that kept serving up surprises.
The Packers took over at midfield after the Panthers were stopped on downs on the opening possession of the second half. They were knocking on the door when play-by-play announcer Al Michaels told viewers, “We’ve got a drone; not ours.”
With the drone in the area, officials sent the players to their sidelines. Play stayed on hold until the broadcast announced that the drone had left and the game was good to go.
SM Highlights took stock of the whole night: “Drops, doinks, fumbles, injuries, and now unidentified flying objects. This game has had it all.”
Once play resumed, Jordan Love wasted little time capitalizing, connecting with Josh Jacobs on a four-yard touchdown pass to extend Green Bay’s lead to 27-10.
For several fans, disbelief came first. One fan wrote, “A drone is delaying the game. Ain’t no way.”
Packers reporter Matt Schneidman was left with questions: “There’s a drone overhead? That’s why they’re stopping the game?”
That post drew a blunt reply from another fan: “What a joke.”
However, others took it in stride. Front Office Sports reporter Ryan Glasspiegel posted, “Never seen a game stopped on account of a drone before.” He added, “This league keeps you on your toes.”
Replying to SM Highlights’ rundown of the night, another fan joked that the “only thing missing is a power outage at this point.”
Not everyone saw the humor in it, though. Another fan took the stoppage more seriously, writing, “That stoppage of the Packers and Panthers because of a drone violating the airspace is… disturbing.”
The stoppage came in the middle of an already eventful night.
Packers receiver Christian Watson had six catches for 100 yards before leaving in the first half with a chest injury. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation but was cleared, returned to Lambeau Field, and re-entered the game in the third quarter. Notably, Panthers cornerback Will Lee III also went down on the same play, clutching his hamstring.
In the end, the Packers eked out a 27-19 win over the Panthers to improve to 5-3.
