Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam finally completed his century on Day 2 of the first Test against West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on October 29. After being stranded on 99 not out when bad light brought an early end to the opening day’s play, the left-hander reached the milestone during the morning session.

Shadman produced a patient knock of 105 off 234 deliveries, striking 11 boundaries to anchor Bangladesh’s innings. However, West Indies fought back with crucial wickets through spinner Joshua Bishop, who dismissed the opener and picked up another wicket to slow the hosts’ progress.

Shadman Islam completes century after overnight wait

Shadman resumed Day 2 just one run short of his hundred after batting for 219 deliveries on the opening day. He negotiated the early overs before collecting the run needed to reach three figures, bringing relief after missing out on the milestone the previous evening. The opener continued to hold the innings together before Bishop ended his stay at the crease for 105.

His dismissal gave West Indies an important breakthrough after Bangladesh had relied heavily on his resilience following early wickets on Day 1. Shadman’s century was a significant contribution for the hosts, who had elected to bat first after winning the toss. His innings included 11 fours and came off 234 balls, providing Bangladesh with a solid platform despite the visitors’ efforts to keep the scoring under control.

Joshua Bishop leads West Indies’ fightback

West Indies made further inroads during the morning session as Bishop struck twice to check Bangladesh’s progress. The visitors looked to exploit the assistance available to the spinners, with the pitch beginning to show signs of variable bounce and turn.

Bangladesh reached 245/5 after 87 overs, with wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das unbeaten on 23 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz on 12. The pair faced the task of rebuilding the innings and helping the hosts post a competitive first-innings total.
