Promising Bishop Lavis soccer star Sidney Schoeman is chasing his dream of striking it big at the prestigious Dallas Cup.

The 16-year-old United FC right winger has been selected to take part in the Dallas Cup in the United States in March 2027.

The Dallas Cup is an invitation-only tournament held annually during Easter week. The 2027 edition runs from 21 to 28 March. According to the tour presentation, the event draws more than 100 000 spectators and players from over 100 countries.

Players who made a named for themselves at the tournament include football legends like Michael Owen, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and Raul, as well as current Arsenal Bukayo Saka.

Sidney’s mother, Chevonne Hendricks, said they are doing everything to give him his best shot at his dream and have kicked off a BackaBuddy campaign, targeting R67 000.

“He was spotted by one of the scouts in the Local Football Association tournament. As his mother, I am doing everything I can to help him make this dream a reality,” Hendricks said.

The squad is due to leave on 14 March 2027 and return on 30 March 2027.

According to the presentation supplied by the family, the tour package covers tournament entrance fees, return flights, accommodation in Austin, meals, transport, tour kit and travel insurance. Visa fees and spending money are not included.

Hendricks believes that this opportunity could offer her son a path away from the dangers of Bishop Lavis and hopes that Sidney’s journey could also encourage other youngsters.

She said: “I believe his journey could inspire other young people from Bishop Lavis to believe in themselves, work hard, and never give up on their dreams, regardless of where they come from.”

‘A chance to change my future’

Meanwhile, Sidney is dreaming of showing what he can do on the big stage, where Europe’s biggest leagues send their youth teams to compete.

Honestly, I’m really excited and grateful for this opportunity because football is something I love with all my heart.

"This means a lot to my family and me. It’s a chance for me to step out of my comfort zone, experience something new, and show what I can do on a bigger stage.

“My dream is to become a professional footballer and make my family proud.

“I want to be able to give back to the people who have supported me and show other young boys from my community that where you come from doesn’t determine where you can go.”

The teenager admitted he still has room to grow.

“I know I still have a lot to learn, but I’m willing to work hard, stay focused, and keep pushing myself to become a better player.

“For me, this is more than just playing football in Dallas.

“It’s a chance to change my future, and I’m ready to give it everything I’ve got,” he said.
