Chelsea weighs €120M double bid for de Jong and Koundé

Frenkie de Jong approaches a pivotal juncture at FC Barcelona as contrasting valuation figures and tactical shifts emerge across Spanish and British media. While club valuations for a potential winter departure sit at €65 million, reports from Spain indicate that Premier League side Chelsea is weighing a combined €120 million double deal that would also include defender Jules Koundé.

Valuation Discrepancies and Transfer Figures

FC Barcelona maintains a valuation of €65 million for the Dutch international, according to reports published by El Nacional. The Catalan club considers this figure a baseline for negotiations as they evaluate their squad depth following the summer acquisition of Rodri. However, conflicting financial horizons have circulated across European sports desks. TEAMtalk previously downplayed links to English suitors such as Chelsea and Manchester United, while Italian outlet TuttoSport reported that Juventus holds interest in a loan deal carrying a €35 million purchase option—a figure hindered by the Serie A club’s current financial capacity.

In a sharp counter-narrative, El Nacional reported that Chelsea is preparing a winter approach targeting both De Jong and Jules Koundé for a combined €120 million fee. The report notes that Koundé would command €55 million as a reinforcement for the right side of central defense, while De Jong is viewed as a solution to fill the gap left by Enzo Fernández’s departure to Manchester City. Meanwhile, Football Insider and VoetbalPrimeur noted that any direct pursuit from Stamford Bridge for De Jong alone would require a minimum outlay of £50 million—approximately €57 million—given that the player’s contract runs through June 2029.

Tactical Puzzles and Squad Depth Under Hansi Flick

Head coach Hansi Flick faces an intricate selection puzzle upon the midfielder’s return from a knee injury sustained during the World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Sport and Cadena SER reported that Flick has tested De Jong in central defense during training sessions, viewing the former Ajax player as an alternative in the backline given the competition in midfield. Barcelona currently boasts eight players competing for three central positions: Rodri, Marc Bernal, Gavi, Pedri, Fermín, Dani Olmo, talent Brian Fariñas, and De Jong.

Flick addressed the media ahead of a domestic fixture against Real Betis, confirming that the 29-year-old midfielder has returned to the matchday squad. “We have not trained him much as a central defender, but more in a five-versus-five situation where he plays more defensively,” Flick said during his pre-match press conference, as reported by NOS. “I see during training that he is very focused and 100 percent convinced that he wants to show how good he is, and that is a very good situation. He is a top player and gives us an extra option, that is good.”

Upcoming Fixtures and Squad Status

Barcelona enters the weekend fixture carrying an unblemished record in their opening eight league matches, sitting ahead of third-place Real Betis. De Jong’s inclusion in the traveling squad marks his first competitive matchday involvement of the season after missing the opening months of the campaign due to his knee injury. While Spanish sports daily Sport highlighted the tactical complications of integrating the midfielder into a winning formula that features recent arrivals like Rodri—named the best player of the World Cup—the club continues its preparations for the winter transfer window as external interest from English and Italian clubs persists.
