The Village Boys down Chippa United
The Village Boys down Chippa United

Kruger United secured their second Betway Premiership win of the season by defeating hosts Chippa United 1-0 at the Buffalo City Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Sipho Sibiya struck the only goal in injury time at the end of the game, as the Village Boys picmed up a second win in the space of three league matches and rose to 12th place on the log.

The Chilli Boys saw their unbeaten streak end at four league matches, and they remained in ninth spot.

After a quiet opening, Chippa gradually began to take control of the match and were close to an opener in the 37th minute when Goodman Mosele’s cross-shot almost drifted into goal, forcing Kruger goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou into a good save.

A minute later the host put together a fine attacking move which presented Justice Figuareido with a sight of goal, but he was denied by a heroic block from Thulani Ndlela.

Kruger offered little in attack through the first half, but in injury time before the break they should have claimed the lead when Celimpilo Ngema found space in the penalty area, but his low shot flashed just wide of the target – leaving the game 0-0 at the interval.

Both teams made changes at the start of the second half, with Chippa sending on Sirgio Kammies and Ibrahim Bance, while Kruger introduced Thendo Mukumela.

The Village Boys had the first chance after the restart, with Sipho Sibiya heading just wide of the mark from a corner kick in the 52nd minute, while the hour mark presented Ngema with another shooting opportunity in the box, but he blazed an effort over the target.

The Chilli Boys had to wait until the 77th minute for their first genuine scoring attempt of the second half, with Azola Matrose trying his luck from a free kick, but his left-footed effort drifted wide of the mark.

Figuareido could have stolen the win for the home team in injury time when he was able to burst free down the left of the penalty area, but his low shot was straight at Dandjinou.

And the Village Boys made him pay for the miss a couple of minutes later, as Sibiya controlled a cross from the right flank and crashed a shot into the bottom corner of the net to secure a famous away win.

The teams will be back in Premiership action on the final weekend of October, with Chippa visiting Stellenbosch FC, and Kruger hosting Richards Bay.
