FIFA U17 WWC:Nigeria Flamingos Beat Defending Champions Korea DPR 3-1 to Reach Knockout Stage

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have secured a place in the knockout stage of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after recording an impressive 3-1 victory over defending champions Korea DPR in their final Group B fixture.

The Nigerian youngsters delivered a commanding performance against the reigning champions, scoring three goals before conceding a late consolation to finish second in Group B and advance to the next round.

The victory underlined the Flamingos’ attacking strength and determination as they overcame one of the most formidable teams in the competition.

Adegbuyi and Umejiaku Put Nigeria in Control

Nigeria made an early statement when Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 15th minute, finishing off an opportunity created by Mary Dunstan to give the Flamingos a deserved lead.

The early goal boosted Nigeria’s confidence, with the team continuing to apply pressure and create problems for the defending champions.

The Flamingos doubled their advantage in the 38th minute through Oluebube Umejiaku, who converted an assist from Tosin Rafiu to send Nigeria into the half-time break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

The two first-half goals gave Nigeria a strong platform as the team sought to protect its position in Group B and secure qualification for the knockout rounds.

Kanyinsola Yusuf Scores Stunning Free-Kick

Nigeria continued their impressive display after the restart, extending their advantage to three goals in the 56th minute.

Kanyinsola Yusuf produced a superb free-kick to make it 3-0, leaving the defending champions with a significant deficit to overcome.

The goal further strengthened Nigeria’s control of the contest and brought the Flamingos closer to a memorable victory against one of the tournament’s leading sides.

Korea DPR, however, refused to surrender without a fight and eventually found the back of the net in the 82nd minute through Yu Jong Hyang.

The late strike reduced the deficit to 3-1, but Nigeria maintained its advantage until the final whistle to complete an impressive win.

Flamingos Advance to the Knockout Stage

The 3-1 result confirmed Nigeria’s second-place finish in Group B and secured the team’s progression to the knockout stage of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Beating the defending champions will provide a significant confidence boost for the Flamingos as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the tournament.

Nigeria’s performance was particularly encouraging, with Adegbuyi, Umejiaku and Yusuf all finding the net to demonstrate the team’s attacking quality.

The Flamingos will now turn their attention to the knockout rounds, where they will aim to build on their group-stage performance and continue their pursuit of the world title.

With their emphatic victory over Korea DPR, Nigeria have sent a strong message to the remaining teams that they remain serious contenders in the competition.
