BEWARE all sports fans! The next time you visit your local college football stadium, self-checkout may have infiltrated the venue.
Northwestern University’s newly built Ryan Field is equipped with dozens of self-service counters that use AI checkout technology to help get you back to your seat quicker.
The $875million sports arena – the most expensive college football stadium ever constructed – spent a good chunk of change on a faster checkout experience for football fanatics.
Every in-stadium market will feature AI technology from Mashgin, which uses computer vision to recognize items in a customer’s order without the need for barcodes or manual scanning.
The self-checkout tech boasts the benefit of instant ring-up.
All sports fans have to do is place their purchases on the Mashgin Power Counter, and the device will use cameras to instantly identify them by their size, shape, and color.
Ryan Field, a 35,000-capacity stadium, has 62 of the advanced checkout systems scattered across the concourses to help to dramatically cut down lines and wait times for Wildcats fans.
The launch marked the largest initial deployment of the AI-powered self-checkout machines in any sports venue to date.
Northwestern University’s new college football stadium in Evanston, a northern suburb of Chicago, beats out the Buffalo Bills’ new Highmark Stadium in New York, for example, which deployed 52 of the Mashgin Power Counters.
Mashgin has been deployed in plenty of sports arenas and other industries, now in 65% of all pro sports stadiums.
The tech is part of Northwestern’s broader push to give its new stadium a premium, guest-centric atmosphere.
Stadium officials devised a “Two-Minute Market” plan, hoping that the self-checkout system will get sports fans from the concourse back to their seats in two minutes or under.
In addition to the Mashgin Power Counters, stadium guests will find a new $5 menu aimed at making game-day food more accessible for everyone.
Items like hot dogs, burgers, nachos, popcorn, and soft drinks will all be priced at $5.
The new stadium will also serve several Chicago brands and stadium staples, including Al’s Italian Beef, Pat’s tavern-style pizza, jumbo Vienna Beef Chicago-style dogs, Chicago Steakhouse Burgers made with USDA Prime beef, and Garrett’s Popcorn.
“A world-class game-day experience shouldn’t be reserved for the few, it should belong to every fan,“ said Pat Ryan Jr., CEO of Ryan Sports Development.
“Premium at new Ryan Field is a philosophy, not a tier, and that philosophy runs all the way to the concession stand: $5 fan favorites, opportunities to enjoy iconic Chicago classics, and be back in your seat in two minutes.”
