Andoni Iraola spots area for Liverpool improvement after Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola question

Andoni Iraola saw his side create several chances against Brentford, with Victor Munoz and Rio Ngumoha among those to impress, but Liverpool only won 2-1 against 10 men

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola was pleased with the chances that his side created against Brentford, even though the Reds only narrowly beat a Bees outfit who ended the game with nine men.

For the majority of the contest, after a red card for Yehor Yarmoliuk, Liverpool was facing a team with only 10 players. Florian Wirtz created nine opportunities for his teammates in all, but the Reds only managed to convert two of them, with Alexander Isak netting the winner after Victor Munoz's low shot had leveled the scores.

"I think both (Wirtz and Bradley Barcola) had a lot of influences in the chances we created," Iraola said in his post-match press conference.

"We missed clear chances — like the chip, and with Lewis Koumas — but I love that he’s having so many chances and being in those situations. Rio (Ngumoha) and Flo (Wirtz) are lovely to have in those moments."

Brentford made it difficult for Liverpool even though it was a man down. The sending off was also harsh, though Bees boss Keith Andrews did not complain too much.

It takes Iraola to three wins from seven Premier League games in charge of Liverpool so far, with Brighton, Arsenal and Crystal Palace all coming up before the November international break.

"They’re a very good team, so to finish with three points here is really valuable," Iraola added.

"The penalty situation, watching, I don’t think it was a penalty. I don’t think VAR should intervene as there was a clear touch after.

"I remember Nottingham Forest — it was a very similar situation where they said we are not going to intervene because there is contact.

"I think Dango (Ouattara) arrived to touch the ball — but the way they explained it after Forest is exactly that one, and I don't think the VAR should intervene.

"We played very well in the minutes until 2-1 against 10 players. We were patient, finding good positions. We're probably more disappointed after we scored to make it 2-1.

"Then we felt like we have something to lose. We were playing freely, we were finding good spots, we were sending a lot of players forward.

"I think we are doing (well) and then you score the 2-1 and then we missed clear counters to finish the game. Overall, I think the situation against 10 players, I think we dealt with it quite well."
