Back
Willow Springs Raceway came back for its second gigantic motorsports party day, the one it calls Willow Springs Reimagined, this time bringing out racing greats, IROC Porsches, drifting, off-roading, and a time attack hillclimb from Turns 1-5.
Attendance was 4,000 people, down a thousand from the first event last year, but still the second-largest event ever held at the historic track. Plans continue apace for track improvements, including paved runoff areas and condos galore. No condos have yet materialized, but the runoff areas are getting paved.
Some of the highlights:
The Huth Cup, a 12-lap race with motorsports luminaries competing in identically prepared Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Clubsports. Competitors included Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button, Marino Franchitti, Patrick Long, Emelia Hartford, and Singer's Maz Fawaz. You'd just sort of assume Button won, right? But it was some guy named Ed Jones who emerged victorious. Who's he? We had to google it, too. Jones has raced in the IMSA SportsCar championship, NASCAR Xfinity Series, Indy Lights, IndyCar, and the FIA Endurance Championship. So it pays to be well-rounded.
The Petersen Automotive Museum sponsored a Time Attack Hillclimb that saw a wide array of entries, from Vintage B-Sedan to Club Wheel House Classic Cup, IROC Porsche Tribute, and Vintage Motorcycle Racing.
Up on that big paved area behind what used to be called the Budweiser Balcony, there was a drifting exhibition featuring Formula D stars Matt Field and Odi Bakchis alongside local drifter Charlie Ongsingco. There was also a Burnout Competition presented by GT Radial, where Nolan Sykes, editor-in-chief of Donut Media, claimed victory, delivering a spectacular display of tire-shredding performance.
Rivian, in collaboration with DirtFish Rally School, hosted an off-road experience using its quad-motored R1S and R1T EVs. Rivian also showcased its new R2 Performance through professional-driver rally rides at Walt James Stadium, while DirtFish hosted rides in Subaru BRZs.
And it wouldn't be a SoCal car experience without Beverly Hills collector Bruce Meyer, who brought a number of cars from his renowned collection.
Willow continues its growth under new owners CrossHarbor Capital and its Experiential Events Division Summit + Speed, which even arranged a flyover of a Navy F/A-18 and an Air Force F-15. This is the place that plans to hold the first US version of Goodwood in 2027, and both The Duke of Richmond and his son Lord March were on hand at Saturday's event, so maybe we can expect great things, who knows? Let's hope.
