Amogelang Tatai and Glenrose Xaba were crowned Elite Men’s and Women’s Champions of the Boxer Super Run Durban on Sunday, October 18, delivering standout performances at South Africa’s most social 5km run.
Celebrating his Boxer Super Run debut on the day, Tatai claimed the elite men’s title in 13:38. “My plan was just to stick with the first group, but from the start, one of the athletes (defending champion, Ryan Mphahlele) made a break, so I had to chase him. It was tough as I lost most of my strength during the race, so I couldn’t finish strongly. It was an amazing experience to run here with the senior athletes, who have more experience than me. I’m quite proud of myself for beating them,” he said.
Ryan Mphahlele came in second, while Musawenkosi Mnisi finished third.
Glenrose Xaba took top honours in the Elite Women’s race in 15:29, rounding off an exciting day of running on Durban’s streets. “My race was good, and I feel fine. We started very fast, but because the course is challenging, your legs only start to find their rhythm again after you climb the hill. I’m happy with my performance today. The competition was very good and impressive, especially with the younger runners coming through. Karabo More is doing very well and was the one who was going to challenge me, but I was able to put it all together and win the race,” she said.
Karabo More came in second, while Kyla Jacobs finished third.
The Boxer Super Run boasts four dedicated start waves. While entry to the Elite Women and Elite Men waves is by invitation only, runners can choose between the Open Wave and Super Social Wave, according to the type of race-day experience they are looking for.
Michael Meyer, managing director of Stillwater Sports, praised the outstanding performances of the elite athletes and the enthusiastic support of participants, highlighting the Boxer Super Run Durban’s unique ability to bring people together through a shared love of running.
