It’s only taken a week of NBA action for drama to emerge. This time, it’s basketball legend LeBron James in the crossfire, fresh off his 76ers debut. While most fans were only focused on his performance on the court, some were more concerned about his behavior during the pre-game National Anthem.

In a video that’s gone viral, James could be seen completely checked out of the pre-game tradition, which is typically a moment to show respect for his home country. Rather than do the typical motions, LeBron took it upon himself to work on his shooting form. The clip got the attention of U.S. President Donald Trump himself, who made a scathing statement against the 76ers star.

“While listening to our National Anthem, LeBron James disrespects our Country! I said right from the beginning that he’s no good, a TOTAL DISGRACE,” wrote Trump. “LeBron James should apologize to all of those Great American Warriors and Heroes who died for the American Flag, and all that our Country stands for!”

During the National Anthem, the accepted practice is to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the team near mid-court, staying quiet and still with a hand over the heart. James did not follow any of those traditions, seemingly going out of his way to appear disinterested.

It’s unclear what prompted LeBron to ignore the National Anthem like that, but critics find it hard to believe it was unintentional. For his entire career, James has been very meticulous about his actions in public, and he made absolutely no attempt to appear engaged or moved by the U.S. anthem last night.

While it’s hardly an illegal act by LeBron, it suggests that he may not be entirely supportive of the way this country is going right now, and it would align with everything he’s said in the past. Since Trump’s first term back in 2017, LeBron has been one of his harshest critics. Besides speaking out publicly against the President, he’s advocated for his opposition in every election, making it clear which side he stands on.

As a result, Trump has made it a point to attack the legend every chance he gets. Over the years, he’s called him all kinds of names, including a b*tch and a racist. He’s also trolled LeBron about “becoming a woman” and joining the WNBA.

Through it all, LeBron has been mostly silent, but acting out during the National Anthem could be his small form of protest. Whether it’s to draw attention, express disapproval, or simply start a conversation, there are many reasons why LeBron might adopt this strategy to make a larger point about the state of the U.S.

Then again, it could have just been a momentary lapse in judgment. After 23 years in the NBA, LeBron has had to sit through so many National Anthems that he probably doesn’t think twice about it anymore. Regardless of the truth, however, LeBron’s behavior was enough for Donald Trump to take notice, and he did not hesitate to use it against him.
