One Tottenham star made it into Troy Deeney’s Gameweek Eight Team of the Week, but Mateus Fernandes missed out despite delivering a man-of-the-match performance.
Mathys Tel and Mateus Fernandes were standout performers for Tottenham Hotspur in their victory over Chelsea, with Fernandes being named man of the match.
The Portuguese midfielder’s underlying numbers highlighted his influence, topping several possession and defensive metrics.
No player managed more touches, completed passes, accurate passes, successful open-play passes, passes in the opposition half, successful final-third passes, line-breaking passes, penalty area entries, accurate crosses, chances created, tackles (5), and overall defensive contributions.
Tel, meanwhile, impressed on the wing and capped his performance with a superb second goal – one of his best displays in a Spurs shirt.
FotMob gave Fernandes a 7.1 match rating and Tel an 8.0, with the Frenchman named the stats-based site’s man of the match.
Former Premier League forward Troy Deeney agreed with the assessment of Tel’s impact, naming him in his gameweek eight team of the week.
Deeney selected his XI in a 4-3-3 formation, choosing the players he felt were the standout of the round. Only one Spurs player made the cut – Tel – who was included in a front three alongside Bournemouth’s Rayan and Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson.
Speaking about Tel, Deeney wrote in his BBC Sports column: “Tel had a real difficult start to his career at Spurs. I thought for the first time against Chelsea we saw what Spurs saw in him: pace, power, hard work, and then obviously an unbelievable goal to finish it as well.”
While Fernandes was a standout performer, Deeney left him out of his XI. The former Watford striker instead opted for Shea Charles (Fulham), Nico González (Newcastle), and Marcus Tavernier (Bournemouth).
González is Fernandes’ direct rival in Deeney’s selection and impressed with an 8.1 FotMob rating.
However, it is worth noting that Newcastle faced a significantly weaker opponent in Crystal Palace, while Spurs were up against Chelsea – a side in the European spots.
Tottenham’s win was also a derby encounter at Stamford Bridge, where they had only won once before in the Premier League era.
Fernandes played a central role in making history, and it remains unclear how he was overlooked by Deeney.
