Carlos Baleba Earns Wayne Rooney’s Praise Despite Manchester United’s Champions League Defeat to Atlético Madrid

Manchester United suffered a disappointing 2–0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League at the Metropolitano Stadium, but Cameroonian midfielder Carlos Baleba emerged as one of the few positives for the English side, earning praise from former United captain Wayne Rooney.

Baleba, who started in the heart of United’s midfield, delivered an energetic display despite his team’s struggles against Diego Simeone’s well-organised Atlético side.

The summer signing showed glimpses of his quality through his physical presence, work rate and ability to progress the ball, recording a 100 per cent success rate in aerial duels, long balls and dribbles, according to the match statistics.

However, his efforts were not enough to prevent United from suffering defeat in the Spanish capital. Baleba played 66 minutes before being substituted as the visitors struggled to contain their opponents.

Atlético made a dream start when Pablo Barrios opened the scoring in the first minute, immediately putting Manchester United under pressure. The hosts maintained their advantage for much of the contest before the match took another turn in the closing stages.

United defender Leny Yoro was sent off in the 74th minute, leaving the visitors with 10 men. Atlético capitalised on their numerical advantage five minutes later, with Ademola Lookman finding the net in the 79th minute to seal the victory.

Despite the disappointing result, Baleba’s individual performance attracted positive attention, with Rooney identifying the midfielder as one of United’s standout performers on the night.

“I found that Baleba was excellent. He brought energy to the midfield. I thought Santos did well too,” Rooney said.

Rooney’s assessment offered a rare note of encouragement for Manchester United following a difficult European outing. Baleba’s performance suggested that, even in defeat, the midfielder could provide the dynamism and physical intensity needed to strengthen United’s engine room.

Nevertheless, the result will leave United reflecting on their defensive shortcomings.

For Baleba, Rooney’s endorsement provides a personal boost, although the midfielder will be eager to translate his individual promise into performances that help Manchester United secure better results in Europe.
