Markus Howard has officially left Kosner Baskonia in a departure that involves a complex exit package totaling approximately two million euros, according to a report published by El Correo. The American guard, who signed with Zenit Saint Petersburg as a free agent, leaves the club after a negotiated compensation package. According to El Correo, the club agreed to pay Howard roughly two million euros to cover a portion of the salary remaining on his contract, which spanned the current season and the next. Because the club needed to relieve its wage bill, the payments were split into a mutually agreed-upon schedule. Reports from Cadena SER noted that Howard previously commanded an annual salary of 2.2 million euros.
The parting of ways between Baskonia and the New Jersey-born guard involves a structured compensation package that ranks among the largest contractual settlements in the club’s history.
Upon arriving in Russia under head coach Dusko Ivanovic, Howard is set to join Zenit. Because no transfer fee was involved in the move, it did not generate any capital gains for Baskonia, functioning instead as a signing for Zenit after they parted ways with Malik Newman, as detailed by Cadena SER.
Howard’s transition to the VTB United League was heavily influenced by the presence of Dusko Ivanovic in Saint Petersburg. reported that without the interest from Ivanovic’s squad, the guard’s departure from Vitoria might not have materialized at this juncture, despite previous inquiries from other clubs in the EuroLeague, European leagues, and China. Ivanovic addressed the addition publicly, stating via Cadena SER that “we are interested in this player, he is on the market and he is very good. We are always attentive to improve the squad and it is to our liking.”
The exit closes a four-year chapter that featured significant individual milestones alongside a recent drop in form. Howard arrived in the Basque capital in the summer of 2022 and went on to make 244 official appearances for the club, which included 130 in the EuroLeague and 109 in the Liga Endesa, alongside appearances in the Copa del Rey and Supercopa, according to figures outlined by Marca and ACB. During the 2023–24 campaign, he finished as the top scorer in both the EuroLeague and the Liga Endesa, while also setting the record for the most three-pointers made in a single EuroLeague season and establishing himself as Baskonia’s second-highest all-time three-point scorer in domestic play behind Mirza Teletovic, as noted by Marca.
However, his numbers dipped noticeably over his final two seasons, leading to reduced playing time and occasional absences from domestic matchday squads, a stretch highlighted by Norte Exprés in the context of his utilization under former coach Paolo Galbiati. Following a recent home defeat against Dubai Basketball, Howard acknowledged the crowd from the court of the Buesa Arena, ahead of a farewell gathering organized with supporters at a Vitoria cafe, as reported by Cadena SER and Norte Exprés.
The departure of Howard aligns with broader restructuring at the club, which also saw the dismissal of head coach Paolo Galbiati. According to El Correo, Galbiati’s departure resulted in a 500,000-euro settlement after a conciliation process, mirroring a similar departure agreement reached previously with Pablo Laso. By clearing Howard’s high salary off the books, Baskonia’s sporting management aims to reshape the squad and address weaknesses in the frontcourt, with pivots such as Chris Koloko, Kenneth Faried, and Márcio Santos noted as figures involved in the club’s ongoing roster evaluations for domestic and European competitions.
