Brakpan twins Caleb and Megan-Ann Roberts continued their winning partnership at the Tommy Malone Memorial Race, successfully defending their respective titles in the 7.5km fun run at Boksburg Stadium.
The Irun AC teenagers finished first and second overall, with Caleb taking the men’s title ahead of his sister, who secured the women’s crown.
Megan-Ann jokingly admitted she was disappointed not to beat her twin brother, though she was pleased with her performance.
“I felt a little upset because I wanted to catch my brother. Otherwise, I’m happy with my performance. I thank God for pushing me throughout,” she said.
Caleb dominated the men’s race from the start, crossing the line unchallenged after a perfectly paced performance.
“It felt great crossing the finish line first. The Lord gave me the glory to push through 7.5km. I give all the glory to God. I felt good in the race. My pacing was perfect. It was a nice race,” he said.
Their healthy rivalry and mutual respect continue to drive the twins to improve, with each using the other as a benchmark. However, sharing their passion for running and celebrating victories makes their success even more special.
“It’s very nice to run with her. Whenever I run, I know she wouldn’t catch me. Then I feel great for the victory I get,” Caleb said.
Megan-Ann, however, has her own ambitions when lining up alongside her brother.
“In my mind, I want to beat him. He’s my biggest competition. It’s a healthy competition, and it’s also how I measure my progress because I know if I can beat him, I can beat anyone,” she said.
The twins are now turning their attention to the track after a successful cross-country season, hoping to represent CGA at the ASA sub-youth track and field Championships in Potchefstroom in December.
They made a positive start to the CGA sub-youth season in the opening league on September 24 before producing another encouraging performance in the second league on October 4.
“The goal is to go to nationals again,” Caleb said.
Looking further ahead, both hope to follow in the footsteps of Brakpan Olympian Leendert Koekemoer and represent South Africa on the international stage.
“I want to run faster and, when I’m older, represent South Africa,” Megan-Ann said.
Caleb shares that ambition, with his sights set on the sport’s biggest stage.
“I want to go to the Olympics and also win some world titles for my country,” he said.
