1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The goals kept coming as Zesco United hit top gear to record their first win of the season with a commanding 5-0 victory over Mutondo Stars at Trade Fair Grounds in Ndola.
Coming into the match on the back of one defeat and two draws, Zesco were determined to give their fans something to savour on Independence Day.
The net rippled inside the first minute when Anthony Shipanuka fired home from close range to give Zesco an early lead and set the tone for an impressive afternoon. Shipanuka remained a constant threat to the Mutondo Stars defence and came close to doubling his tally 12 minutes later.
Zesco continued to press and were rewarded in the 37th minute when Abraham Siankombo was brought down inside the penalty area. Kennedy Musonda stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to make it 2-0.
Before Mutondo Stars could recover, Musonda struck again a minute later, completing his brace and putting Zesco firmly in control of the contest. The hosts maintained their attacking intent after the break as head coach Mwenya Chipepo made several changes, with the team continuing to search for more goals.
On the hour mark, Happy Nsiku rose highest to head home from a corner, extending Zesco’s advantage to 4-0 and further delighting the home supporters. Elvis Addae completed the rout in the 88th minute, capitalising on an error by Mutondo Stars goalkeeper Scotch Mwanza to make it five on a memorable afternoon for the Ndola side.
Zesco will now turn their attention to Wednesday’s rescheduled Week Three fixture against Roan United as they look to build on their first victory of the campaign.
