Tottenham star Mateus Fernandes has opened up on a key turning point in the season as the club push to give fans titles in the near future.

While Spurs were putting in some strong performances earlier in the season, they were crumbling after conceding, but that has changed over the last few weeks.

Tottenham showed tremendous character to fight back from adversity against Man United and Coventry City, and delivered a statement performance at Stamford Bridge.

The 2-0 win on Saturday has taken Spurs to three points off sixth place, with Europa League qualification now looking like a much more realistic aim.

However, the Tottenham star, who was the best player on the pitch against Chelsea, has now revealed that the club are aiming a lot higher than just European qualification.

Mateus Fernandes says Tottenham squad want to change the fans’ mentality

Spurs had won just once in the Premier League era at Stamford Bridge ahead of Saturday, but one would not have known that from the confidence with which the Tottenham players were pinging the ball around in West London.

Fernandes has now revealed that far from being burdened by that historic record, the players were keen to change the mentality of the club by doing what they had failed to do in the past.

The midfielder also made it clear that rather than resting on their laurels, the squad is keen to keep going and battle for major honours.

Following the 2-0 win, Fernandes said (via the club’s official website): “It’s a battle, a derby, so you need to fight for every ball, every minute. We know that Tottenham don’t have a lot of victories in this stadium. So, we wanted to change this mentality around the club, around the fans.

“We want to fight for big things, for titles. This is our challenge, so we keep going, keep going, keep going, working hard, believing in everyone in the club and doing the right things.”

Fernandes admits Marbella trip was a turning point for Spurs

The Tottenham players went on a week-long bonding and training camp in Marbella after the 1-1 draw against Man United.

Some pundits were critical of De Zerbi for the timing of the Marbella trip, given that it came so soon after the three-week international break.

However, Fernandes has now insisted that the trip to Spain was crucial for bringing the squad together, and revealed that there is huge belief among the group that they can achieve big things.

He added: “Marbella was very important for us as a team. I think it builds a very good relationship with everyone, with the staff, with the team, with the teammates. Now we’re playing as a team. I think this is the change point for everybody. Now we keep going and we believe more than ever in our squad.”
