Trent Alexander-Arnold Faces Another Setback At Real Madrid

The former Liverpool defender is reportedly struggling to win favour under Jose Mourinho, with another frustrating spell on the bench threatening his progress in Spain.

Trent Alexander-Arnold Faces Another Setback At Real Madrid

Trent Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool hoping his move to Real Madrid would shift attention towards his attacking qualities rather than defensive shortcomings.

However, his difficult start in Spain has brought fresh scrutiny, with the England international struggling to establish himself as a regular starter.

Liverpool says that since arriving, Alexander-Arnold has worked under three managers, and Jose Mourinho’s approach appears unlikely to suit his preferred style of play.

Last week, Mourinho selected Fede Valverde at right-back against Sevilla, then retained the Uruguayan for Real Madrid’s Champions League demolition of RB Leipzig.

Alexander-Arnold remained an unused substitute, marking the seventh time this season he has been left on the bench.

Mourinho Explains His Valverde Decision

Mourinho praised Valverde’s versatility after the performance, describing the midfielder as capable of operating across several positions at an exceptionally high level.

“The other day, half-jokingly, half-seriously, I was saying that if we had four Fedes, one would play at full-back, another in midfield, on the right wing, as a number 10…” Mourinho said.

He added: “This is Fede Valverde, one of the most versatile players in world football. He can play everywhere, and at a very high level. Today he played an outstanding match.”

Mourinho explained that his selection depended on the tactical qualities required, including attacking runs, stamina and the ability to provide forward support.

He also acknowledged the difficulty of managing two quality right-backs, suggesting competition for the position remains intense at the Spanish giants.

With Valverde impressing and Denzel Dumfries offering another conventional option, Alexander-Arnold faces a difficult challenge to reclaim his starting place.

His reported feelings about life at Madrid have emerged amid the uncertainty, but the supplied report offers no direct confirmation of his private views.

For now, another setback appears possible unless Alexander-Arnold can convince Mourinho that his strengths deserve a regular place in the team.
