Man City showed signs of being scintillating in that first half but they also showed signs of vulnerability and Brighton capitalised on that with two counter-attacking plays where they really took their opportunities. It ended up being a brilliant game in the first half, jeopardy throughout the whole second half.

Mary Fowler and Carlotta Wamser are on for Manchester City, replacing Grace Clinton and Niamh Charles.

Just before those subs were made, Fran Kirby went to ground after a challenge from Alex Greenwood in the City box. The ex-England playmaker asks the question, but the referee says no to a penalty.

Manchester City Andree Jeglertz speaking to BBC Two at half-time: "Not frustrated. We're still in the lead. First 25 minutes was amazing but we became a little bit sloppy in the details and good teams like Brighton punish you. We need to go back to what we did in the beginning and then it will be fine.

"There is definitely defending we can do better, but also attacking. As long as we have the ball they can't score either."

What a strange half!

City were absolutely light years ahead of Brighton and led 3-0 within 30 minutes. Then they just... stopped playing.

It allowed Brighton to settle and while the visitors haven't been great on the whole, they have done enough to get into attacking positions and take advantage of a defence that's totally switched off.

Fran Kirby has shown her quality and Caitlin Hayes has been very impressive at the back for Brighton. They have needed to be.

Brighton's efforts have been worth it and they will go into half-time believing they are very much in this game.

Game on! Brighton pull one back.

Kiko Seike keeps the Manchester City defenders occupied as she jinks through the box before laying off to Fran Kirby, who swivels quickly and fizzes the ball straight across the goal mouth where Olivia Garcia lies in wait.

The American gets the ball stuck under her feet initially but she makes no mistake on her next attempt and pokes in from two yards out.

Manchester United want a penalty - Anna Sandberg runs onto a pass and crosses, but her delivery appears to strike the arm of Charlton defender Elisha N'Dow.

The referee isn't having it, but replays show United had a case.

Play goes on and Dominque Janssen tries her luck from range, but her strike flies wide.

It's been a difficult start to the season for Brighton, who didn't have much time to get used to new boss Arturo Ruiz before it kicked off.

They got their first win on the board against struggling Charlton Athletic before the international break but this will be a much bigger test.

Defending champions Manchester City are formidable at home and have won every game so far in the WSL this season.

Ruiz admitted it was more challenging than he thought the start would be and agreed results are important to give his side confidence.

"In any professional team, when a big change comes, results are very important. Unfortunately, it is something we cannot control," he said.

"The most important thing is building healthy relationships with the team that helps make us feel strong when we don’t win."

Brighton midfielder Fran Kirby told the Women's Football Weekly podcast she was 'stressed' by former boss Dario Vidosic's exit.

A result of any kind here today at the Joie Stadium could be a long way for Brighton in terms of building momentum and confidence.

London City Lionesses manager Eder Maestre believes his side's dismantling of Tottenham two weeks ago could be a springboard for them to reach the next level.

"I think Spanish culture has a strong tactical vision, so being able to represent that culture in a very physical environment is something challenging," Maestre said during his pre-match media conference.

"You need to adapt to the old environment, and seeing the team being able to feel strong against a team as strong as Tottenham is a very good starting point to start dreaming big.

"I'm very happy to start seeing the way we are pushing. Winning in Tottenham is very good. Winning like we won is very good, but these points are the same that we are going to play against Everton or other teams in the competition, so it's about not losing the focus and trying to be ready for the next challenge."

There's lots of injuries in the Manchester City squad but it's a boost to see defender Rebecca Knaak back in the squad and on the bench.

Andree Jeglertz has made three changes to the side who beat Arsenal in their last match before the international break.

Midfielder Sam Coffey picked up an injury in that match so misses out. In comes Grace Clinton and Laura Blindkilde Brown.

Kerstin Casparij starts in place of Carlotta Wamser in defence while Beth Mead is not in the squad as I'm told she's being rested.

Manchester City XI: Yamashita, Rose, Greenwood, Clinton, Shaw, Hemp, Casparij, Blindkilde Brown, Fujino, Charles, Hasegawa.

Subs: Cumings, Fowler, Wienroither, Beney, Knaak, Prior, Wamser, Lewis, Davies.

There is just one change to the Brighton side from their victory over Charlton Athletic.

Midfielder Lia Walti is not in the squad so in comes Dutchwoman Marit Auee for her first WSL start of the season.

Brighton XI: Nnadozie, Vanegas, George, Symonds, Cankovic, Seike, Kirby, Hayes, Tvedten, Garcia, Auee.

Subs: Loeck, Mpome, Joramo, Rayner, Olislagers, Peskett, Murphy, Warren, Gay.

London City Lionesses are without defender Mapi Leon this afternoon, who misses out with a minor injury, while star midfielder Alexia Putellas is among the substitutes.

They are replaced by Elena Linari and Delphine Cascarino.

London City Lionesses XI: Lete, Fernandez, Kardinaal, Corrales, Van de Donk, Linari, Godfrey, Arques, Cascarino, Diani, Geyoro.

Subs: Earps, Perez, Putellas, Parris, Anyomi, Godwin, El Bergui, Kafaji, Thomsen.

There are three changes for Everton from the side who beat Birmingham before the break.

Zara Kramzar is absent, while Hannah Silcock and Honoka Hayashi drop to the bench.

Rion Ishikawa, Clare Wheeler and Holly McNamara come in to replace them.

Everton XI: Brosnan, Pacheco, Layzell, Ishikawa, Blundell, Mace, Wheeler, Van Gool, Vignola, Momiki, McNamara.

Subs: Foster-Inman, Hayashi, Cain, Rantala, Mouchon, Finnigan, Galli, Silcock.

The ball is wonderful from Blakstad, the header is perfect. It's back across where it has come from. If you go at the near post I think Hampton is probably going to get something on that.

To be honest, I think on the balance of play they just about deserve that.

West Ham's last match, a 3-0 defeat by Chelsea, was the first time they failed to register a shot on target.

They haven't looked like doing much better today.

They've enjoyed possession but haven't caused any issues for Crystal Palace.

Rita Guarino decides to keep faith with the same West Ham team which suffered a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on 4 October.

Kelly Gago and Seraina Piubel start in attack having netted just one goal between them in the WSL all season.

West Ham XI: Picaud-Inconnu, Belloumou, Cascarino, Codina, Riesen, Asseyi, Siren, Zelem, Kumagai, Gago, Piubel

Subs: Endo, Nystrom, Tennebo, Wareing, Morgan, Peacock, Wandeler, Dowsett, Oztas
