Who is Alex Greenwood’s partner? Meet former footballer Jack O’Connell
Why is the Ballon d'Or being held in London?

Alex Greenwood is one of England’s most experienced footballers, having helped the Lionesses win back-to-back European Championship titles in 2022 and 2025.

The defender, who captains Manchester City, has established herself as a key figure for club and country, earning recognition for her leadership, technical ability and versatility on the pitch.

But away from football, Greenwood has maintained a long-term relationship with fellow footballer Jack O’Connell, with the pair announcing their engagement in June 2026.

Greenwood returned to England in 2020 to sign for Manchester City, where she has become one of the team’s most influential players.

Internationally, Greenwood made her debut to England in 2014 and has gone on to become one of the most legendary players in the Lionesses squad.

She was part of the team that won Euro 2022 on home soil before retaining the title at Euro 2025 in Switzerland, where she scored in the penalty shootout against Spain in the final.

Greenwood has been included on the 2026 Ballon d’Or shortlist, reflecting her standing on the international stage and her contributions to both Manchester City and England.

Who is Alex Greenwood’s partner Jack O’Connell?

Greenwood is engaged to Jack O’Connell, a former professional footballer who played as a defender during his career.

O’Connell came through Blackburn Rovers’ academy before going on to represent clubs including Brentford and Sheffield United.

He became a well-known name among Sheffield United supporters during the club’s rise through the English football leagues.

His playing career was ultimately curtailed by a long-severe knee injury, with the former defender retiring from professional football in 2023.

The couple share a love of the sport, having met while they were students at Savio Salesian College in Bootle, Merseyside.

Both grew up in the north-west of England, and football has remained a significant part of their lives throughout their relationship.

The couple announced their engagement on June 21, 2026, marking a new chapter in their relationship.
