Formula 1 has paid tribute to Sir Patrick Stewart by recalling the Canadian Grand Prix podium on which he drank champagne from Daniel Ricciardo’s racing shoe.
Stewart, Star Trek’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard and X-Men’s Professor Charles Xavier, died Wednesday at 86, his spokesperson confirmed to CBS News.
The sport’s official account shared the Montreal moment with the message: “Rest In Peace, Sir Patrick Stewart.”
In June 2017, Stewart was conducting the podium interviews after Lewis Hamilton led Valtteri Bottas home in a Mercedes one-two, with Ricciardo third for Red Bull. The Australian’s celebration soon gave the interviewer a role beyond asking questions.
Ricciardo performed his familiar shoey, then Stewart joined in. Hamilton admired the actor’s willingness to take part, while making clear that he would rather leave the drinking to somebody else.
Stewart had a simple answer, preserved in Formula 1’s official post-race transcript: “I’m on the podium for the first time; I’ll drink out of anybody’s shoe!”
For an actor accustomed to commanding a starship, it was a cheerfully undignified turn. He brought the occasion exactly what it needed: the willingness to enjoy it.
