Ronald Araujo Thriving At Liverpool After Struggling At Barcelona

The Uruguayan defender has rediscovered his confidence at Anfield, with Liverpool’s pragmatic approach helping him overcome the struggles that undermined his Barcelona career.

Ronald Araujo Thriving At Liverpool After Struggling At Barcelona

Ronald Araujo’s transformation from Barcelona scapegoat into a Liverpool fan favourite has become one of the feelgood stories of the 2026-27 season.

His revival also raises an important question about how footballers are judged when circumstances prevent them from performing consistently.

At Barcelona, Hansi Flick’s aggressive defensive line exposed Araujo’s weaknesses, while repeated mistakes damaged his confidence.

Eventually, a fresh start appeared necessary for both parties.

Under Xavi Hernandez in 2022-23, Barcelona conceded only 20 league goals while winning La Liga.

Their pragmatic approach suited Araujo, whose physical strength and defensive qualities proved valuable within a more conservative system.

Why Liverpool’s System Suits Araujo

Planet football reports that Flick’s arrival changed those demands. Araujo struggled with Barcelona’s high line, faced increasingly harsh criticism and requested time away after a Champions League dismissal to address his mental health.

His teammates nevertheless continued supporting him. After Araujo lifted the Spanish Super Cup in January, following victory over Real Madrid, Raphinha highlighted the squad’s affection.

“It was a way of showing how we feel about him, our affection.”

Despite that support, Araujo’s position became increasingly difficult. Barcelona continued experiencing defensive problems, even after his departure, suggesting their struggles extended beyond one individual.

Liverpool’s decision to sign him initially appeared risky. The club had endured a difficult season, defensive concerns remained, and several expensive recruits had struggled to deliver consistently.

However, manager Andoni Iraola has reportedly adopted a more pragmatic approach than the relentless, high-intensity football associated with his previous teams.

That tactical flexibility appears central to Araujo’s resurgence.

Liverpool currently resemble Xavi’s organised Barcelona more than Flick’s aggressive side, allowing the defender’s physicality and defensive strengths to flourish.

The Premier League’s emphasis on duels, strength and set pieces may also suit his attributes.

Ultimately, Araujo’s revival suggests that finding the right tactical environment can transform perceptions of a footballer.
